What is a Fractional Project job?

A Fractional Project job refers to a role where a professional is hired on a part-time, contract, or temporary basis to manage specific projects without being a full-time employee. This allows companies to access experienced project managers or specialists for short-term or specialized initiatives while controlling costs. Fractional project professionals often work with multiple clients at once, bringing broad industry expertise and flexibility.

How does working as a Fractional Project Manager differ from a full-time project management position?

As a Fractional Project Manager, you typically serve multiple clients or departments on a part-time or contract basis rather than working full-time for a single employer. This means you'll need to adapt quickly to different organizational cultures and processes, manage priorities across projects, and ensure effective communication with diverse stakeholders. The role often offers more flexibility and autonomy, which can be attractive to experienced project managers seeking variety and work-life balance. However, it can also require strong self-management skills and the ability to handle competing deadlines. Being proactive and organized is key to thriving in this dynamic work structure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Fractional Project position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Fractional Project Manager, you need strong project management expertise, experience overseeing multiple initiatives, and a background in your industry of focus. Familiarity with tools like Asana, Trello, Microsoft Project, and relevant project management certifications (such as PMP or Agile) is commonly required. Excellent communication, time management, and the ability to quickly integrate into different teams make candidates stand out. These skills are essential for delivering results, maintaining stakeholder alignment, and driving projects forward in a part-time or consultant capacity.

Job description

Description:

My Valuable Business (MVB) is seeking a strategic and hands-on Fractional Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) to lead and elevate our marketing function. This role will primarily focus on MVBโ€™s internal marketing strategy and execution, while also supporting 2โ€“4 client engagements in a fractional CMO capacity.

This is a part-time role with the opportunity of growth into a full-time position as marketing initiatives scale across MVB and our client base. The ideal candidate operates comfortably at both a strategic and executional levelโ€”able to define direction, build structure, and ensure consistent follow-through. You are someone who can assess whatโ€™s working, identify gaps, and implement practical, results-driven marketing strategies. You bring clarity to messaging, discipline to execution, and accountability to outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Own and lead MVBโ€™s overall marketing strategy, positioning, and brand direction
  • Develop and execute marketing plans that support business growth, lead generation, and brand awareness
  • Evaluate current marketing efforts and implement improvements across channels (digital, content, campaigns, etc.)
  • Establish clear marketing KPIs and reporting to measure effectiveness and ROI
  • Build and refine messaging to ensure consistency across all platforms and client-facing materials
  • Partner with internal teams (leadership, sales, service lines) to align marketing with business objectives
  • Oversee and/or execute content strategy, including thought leadership, social media, and campaign development
  • Identify and implement systems, tools, and processes to improve marketing operations and scalability
  • Provide fractional CMO support to 2โ€“4 clients, including strategy development, advising, and oversight of execution
  • Ensure consistent follow-through on initiatives, campaigns, and deliverables
Requirements:
  • Proven experience in a senior marketing leadership role (CMO, Head of Marketing, or similar), preferably in a fractional or consulting capacity
  • Strong ability to operate at both a strategic and tactical level
  • Experience building and executing marketing strategies for small to midsize businesses or professional services firms
  • Demonstrated success in driving lead generation, brand growth, and measurable marketing outcomes
  • Ability to assess marketing functions, identify gaps, and implement structured improvements
  • Strong understanding of digital marketing channels, content strategy, and campaign management
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate business objectives into clear marketing direction
  • Highly organized with strong project management and follow-through
  • Comfortable managing multiple priorities across internal and client work
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with leadership and cross-functional teams
  • Experience managing external vendors or freelance resources
  • Proficiency with standard marketing tools and platforms (CRM, email marketing, analytics, social media, etc.)
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
