What is a fractional project?

A Fractional Project job refers to a role where a professional is hired on a part-time, contract, or temporary basis to manage specific projects without being a full-time employee. This allows companies to access experienced project managers or specialists for short-term or specialized initiatives while controlling costs. Fractional project professionals often work with multiple clients at once, bringing broad industry expertise and flexibility.

How does working as a fractional project manager differ from a full-time project management position?

As a Fractional Project Manager, you typically serve multiple clients or departments on a part-time or contract basis rather than working full-time for a single employer. This means you'll need to adapt quickly to different organizational cultures and processes, manage priorities across projects, and ensure effective communication with diverse stakeholders. The role often offers more flexibility and autonomy, which can be attractive to experienced project managers seeking variety and work-life balance. However, it can also require strong self-management skills and the ability to handle competing deadlines. Being proactive and organized is key to thriving in this dynamic work structure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the fractional project position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Fractional Project Manager, you need strong project management expertise, experience overseeing multiple initiatives, and a background in your industry of focus. Familiarity with tools like Asana, Trello, Microsoft Project, and relevant project management certifications (such as PMP or Agile) is commonly required. Excellent communication, time management, and the ability to quickly integrate into different teams make candidates stand out. These skills are essential for delivering results, maintaining stakeholder alignment, and driving projects forward in a part-time or consultant capacity.

Job description

Division: Technology Solutions

Location: Remote

Salary Range: $85,000-$105,000, commensurate with experience and technical proficiencies

About Human Capital Education:

Human Capital Education (HCE) enables colleges and universities to grow with purpose by providing the systems, expertise, data, and strategy needed to attract, enroll, and support students more effectively and efficiently. HCE works across undergraduate, graduate, online, and adult programs, helping institutions translate strategy into actionable insights that deliver sustainable results.

In January 2026, Human Capital Education acquired Kennedy & Company Education Strategies, bringing together complementary organizations with a shared commitment to helping institutions navigate change, strengthen performance, and achieve long-term sustainability. Now, HCE serves more than 300 colleges and universities nationwide, offering integrated strategic enablement services that span research, enrollment management, financial analysis, institutional strategy, and technology implementation.

About the Role:

The Fractional Slate Captain serves as a fractional on-demand Slate captain for partner institutions that need dedicated Slate expertise without hiring a full-time role of their own. Acting as an interim or ongoing extension of a partner's team, the Fractional Slate Captain owns the day-to-day operation of one or more partner Slate instances-providing expert guidance across every functional area of Slate, keeping critical processes running, and advancing day-to-date needs based on each partner's goals.

Depending on partner needs, this role may support a single institution on a full-time basis or serve several partner institutions part-time (typically no more than three/four), and may either stand in as a partner's acting Slate Captain or augment and support an existing Slate team at the partner. When not fully committed to dedicated engagements, the Fractional Slate Captain contributes to Human Capital's broader Slate practice through providing Slate consulting to other partners across implementations, training, audit, and support and managed services.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Act as the interim or ongoing Slate Captain for client partners in need of dedicated support, either with single institution or fractionally across multiple partner institutions
  • Own day-to-day operations within partner Slate instances as defined by each partner, whether as the sole acting Slate Captain or augmenting existing partner staff and Slate resources
  • Plan and execute Slate activities scoped to the needs and priorities of each partner institution (e.g. performing Cycle Prep, updating Applications, Queries, Reports, Deliver, Forms, Events, Workflows, Rules, etc.)
  • Provide expert guidance and hands-on Slate expertise across all required functional areas of Slate and in support of all Slate lifecycles
  • Provide training and support as needed to the partners staff that work in various roles within the Slate environment

Required Qualifications:

  • Well-rounded Slate knowledge and abilities, including several areas of mastery
  • Strong knowledge of processes and strategy in one or more of the Slate lifecycles – enrollment, student success and advancement
  • Highly organized with an aptitude for working in a constantly changing environment and adapting changing priorities. This means being able to take on multiple projects, prioritize effectively, manage your time to meet deadlines, and eagerly tackle work across Slate projects
  • Accountable with strong attention to detail. Able to balance working independently with the good judgement to decide when to update stakeholders or escalate a problem.
  • Experience with and/or belief in the importance of customer service as a foundational aspect of business success. You enjoy going the extra mile to make things right and people happy.
  • Posses a client-centric attitude to listen with empathy and the ability to explain both technical and non-technical concepts and issues
  • Minimum of two years as a Slate Captain or in an equivalent role
  • Bachelor's Degree, plus 3+ years of professional work experience, or 5-7 years of professional work experience in higher education/CRM systems

Key Benefits:

  • Opportunity to participate in building something important
  • Experienced management team that enjoys the work – and loves education
  • Competitive salary
  • Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance
  • 401K plan
  • Unlimited PTO policy
  • Wellness Program
  • Flexible work model
  • Community giving/volunteer program

Human Capital Education is an equal-opportunity employer.
