What is a finance startup?

A Finance Startup job typically involves working in a fast-paced, early-stage company focused on financial services, fintech, or investment solutions. Roles can range from financial analysis and accounting to business development and product management. Employees in these roles often wear multiple hats, helping to build financial models, secure funding, or develop innovative financial products. Since startups operate with limited resources, adaptability and problem-solving skills are essential. This environment offers opportunities for rapid learning, career growth, and direct impact on the company's success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a finance startup?

To succeed at a finance startup, you need strong analytical abilities, a solid grasp of financial modeling and forecasting, and typically a background in finance, economics, or business. Familiarity with tools like Excel, QuickBooks, financial databases, and in some cases, advanced analytics platforms or CFA certification is highly valued. Exceptional adaptability, entrepreneurial mindset, and proactive communication are crucial soft skills in this dynamic environment. These competencies are vital because they allow you to handle fast-paced changes, contribute strategically, and drive growth in a startup setting.

What are the typical challenges faced when working at a finance startup, and how can new team members prepare for them?

Working at a finance startup often involves adapting to rapidly changing priorities, limited resources, and a high degree of ambiguity compared to more established companies. New team members should be prepared to tackle a wide range of tasks that might shift from week to week, requiring initiative and resourcefulness. It’s common to collaborate closely with founders, engineers, and other teams, so strong cross-functional communication is important. By maintaining a flexible and solution-oriented mindset, you’ll be well-positioned to thrive and make a positive impact as the company grows.

Job description

Our client is seeking a hands-on, operationally savvy Director of Finance to join our leadership team and own the financial engine of a fast-moving, scaling organization. This is not a back-office role - we need a builder who thrives in startup or small-company environments, creates structure from scratch, and isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves.

You'll lead end-to-end accounting, drive cash flow discipline, partner closely with leadership on FP&A, and strengthen the operational backbone that keeps MedPro running smoothly. If you've served as a Controller, modernized systems, and love blending finance with operations, this role is built for you.

What You'll Own

Full-cycle accounting: GL, AP/AR, payroll, month-end close

Cash flow forecasting, daily cash positioning, and bank reconciliations

Accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting

Internal controls, accounting policies, and compliance

Annual budgeting and financial planning with leadership + FP&A

Coordination with auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners

How You'll Lead

Manage and mentor a small, high-performing finance team

Partner with operations and sales to deliver actionable financial insights

Drive operational initiatives and special projects for senior leadership

How You'll Build

Identify gaps and implement scalable, modern financial processes

Optimize accounting systems (QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar)

Ensure federal, state, and local compliance

Support licensing, permitting, and contract administration

What You Bring

Required

Bachelor's in Accounting, Finance, or related field

8-9+ years progressive finance/accounting experience

2-5+ years in a Controller or equivalent leadership role

Proven success in startup or small-company environments (<200 employees)

Strong GAAP, cash management, and close process expertise

Proficiency with accounting systems + advanced Excel

Preferred

CPA or CMA

Experience in healthcare, waste management, logistics, or service-based industries

HR admin or people-ops exposure

Background in hybrid Finance/Ops or Chief of Staff-style roles

Experience building finance teams and processes during growth

Why MedPro

Competitive salary $110K-$150K

Health, dental, and vision benefits

Direct access to executive leadership

No-politics, collaborative culture

A role where your work has immediate, visible impact
