What is a Finance Startup job?

A Finance Startup job typically involves working in a fast-paced, early-stage company focused on financial services, fintech, or investment solutions. Roles can range from financial analysis and accounting to business development and product management. Employees in these roles often wear multiple hats, helping to build financial models, secure funding, or develop innovative financial products. Since startups operate with limited resources, adaptability and problem-solving skills are essential. This environment offers opportunities for rapid learning, career growth, and direct impact on the company's success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Finance Startup position, and why are they important?

To succeed at a finance startup, you need strong analytical abilities, a solid grasp of financial modeling and forecasting, and typically a background in finance, economics, or business. Familiarity with tools like Excel, QuickBooks, financial databases, and in some cases, advanced analytics platforms or CFA certification is highly valued. Exceptional adaptability, entrepreneurial mindset, and proactive communication are crucial soft skills in this dynamic environment. These competencies are vital because they allow you to handle fast-paced changes, contribute strategically, and drive growth in a startup setting.

What are the typical challenges faced when working at a finance startup, and how can new team members prepare for them?

Working at a finance startup often involves adapting to rapidly changing priorities, limited resources, and a high degree of ambiguity compared to more established companies. New team members should be prepared to tackle a wide range of tasks that might shift from week to week, requiring initiative and resourcefulness. It’s common to collaborate closely with founders, engineers, and other teams, so strong cross-functional communication is important. By maintaining a flexible and solution-oriented mindset, you’ll be well-positioned to thrive and make a positive impact as the company grows.

Job description

About the Role
We're hiring our first dedicated finance leader-a foundational role that will shape how we operate, make decisions, and scale. You'll build the financial backbone of the company and help drive strategy at every level.
You'll partner closely with the CEO and leadership team to own financial planning, fundraising readiness, and company-wide decision making. From modeling and resource allocation to defining the metrics that matter, you'll turn ambiguity into clarity and help guide the business through its next stage of growth.
This role is ideal for someone who is equally comfortable building from scratch, thinking strategically, and operating hands-on across the business.
What You'll Do
  • Own financial planning & modeling: Runway, cash burn, hiring forecasts, scenario planning, and dynamic models that guide company strategy and resource allocation.
  • Drive product + revenue strategy: Model new products, pricing, and GTM initiatives into financial outcomes while flagging risks and opportunities.
  • Lead fundraising & board finance: Prep Series B models, metrics, and materials. Craft investor narratives and standardize core SaaS KPIs like ARR, CAC, LTV.
  • Build revenue infrastructure: Partner with sales/ops to scale quote-to-cash, improve billing/collections, and ensure financial accuracy across the revenue lifecycle.
  • Ensure accounting & reporting integrity: Own financial reporting and close processes with Graphite, implement scalable controls, and maintain compliance.
  • Deliver decision support: Build dashboards, provide actionable insights, and be the company-wide source for "what does this mean financially?

Desired Attributes
  • 4-7 years of experience in finance (startup, growth-stage, or a mix of operating + banking/consulting)
  • Strong financial modeling and analytical skills
  • Experience owning or contributing to fundraising (Series A/B+ preferred)
  • Familiarity with SaaS business models and metrics
  • Track record of working cross-functionally with product, sales, and ops teams
  • Experience operating as a highly autonomous individual contributor

Bonus:
  • Experience as an early or first finance hire
  • Background in investment banking, private equity, venture capital, or similar analytical roles
  • Relevant financial certifications (e.g., CFA or equivalent)
