Job description

Develops, organizes and implements high quality YMCA Before and After School care, Learning Academy, Summer Camp, and other Family Programming including but not limited to: recreational sports leagues, Tots Programming, Teen Programming, and Parent Night Out Events.

This job announcement is not intended to be inclusive of all functions, responsibilities and qualifications associated with the position, however, representative of the essential job functions and typical criteria considered necessary to successfully perform the position.


  • Manages, directs, and coordinates school age child care programming for before and after school programs, full day care, family programming, summer camp, tots programming, youth sport programs, and teen programming at all YMCA locations
  • Ensures high quality program standards and consistently establishes new program activities. Expands programming within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance on a regular basis using coaching techniques. Build relationships with staff and develops strategies to motivate and coach staff to achieve program goals and objectives
  • Develops, manages and controls all income and expenses related to areas of responsibility with guidance of Senior Program Director
  • Ability to initiate activities, participate in programming, and interact with children
  • Ensures that all YMCA, State, and local program safety standards are met and procedures followed
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with school administration, parent groups, and other community partner agencies related to all Youth and Family programming
  • Responds to all parent and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner
  • Oversees and directs the behavior management of children within Youth and Family programs, including but not limited to, daily behavior redirection, parent conferences, behavior plans, and suspension and removal from program
  • Maintains and monitors program documents and environmental scale for compliance with NCDCDEE Childcare program guidelines including but not limited to ensuring monthly and yearly inspections are completed and oversight of recurring staff trainings
  • Develop and coordinate Youth and Family Program curriculum including but not limited to sports leagues, after-school care, summer camp, and tots programs all in accordance with YMCA mission, Character Development integration, and 5-star licensing requirements as necessary
  • Integrate YMCA Character Development materials into all lesson plans and program curriculum
  • Possess working knowledge of child abuse and neglect laws and proper reporting procedures
  • Follow all policies and procedures as set forth in the personnel policy, employee handbook, department handbook and the emergency response plan manual
  • Assists in the Harrison Family YMCA’s Annual Campaign Fundraising activities. Recruits volunteers and storytellers
  • Conduct self in a professional and responsible manner at all times
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Senior Program Director or CEO
  • Responsible for maintaining SFSP sponsor regulations. Ensures all mandatory trainings, reporting and USDA Nondiscrimination Statement is upheld in Summer Food Service Program

  • Certifications required within 30 days of hire: American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid for the Professional Rescuer; the following trainings provided by the Y: Medicare Fraud, Waste, and Abuse; Appropriate Touch; Child Sexual Abuse Prevention; Hazard Communication for Employees; Managing Your Risk of Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens; Preventing Member and Guest Slips, Trips, and Falls; Risk Management 101; Safe Lifting; and Social Media & Digital Communications.
  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent and/or three or more years of management experience, preferably in multiple YMCA program areas or other not-for-profit agencies.
  • Ability to direct through supervision of staff and program development.
  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, behavior management and age-appropriate discipline strategies for children.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Scheduling flexibility based on meeting demands of job roles: early mornings, late nights, and weekend work possible.
  • Valid NC Driver’s License.
  • Ability to travel on a flexible schedule as needed with a driving record that meets YMCA policies.
  • Proof of auto insurance on vehicle used is required.
  • YMCA Leader certification preferred.

  • Travel is primarily within a 30 mile radius during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervises full time and part time staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; reviewing and approving timesheets; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; monitoring and updating all required staff certifications; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

COMPUTER LITERACY: Skills are essential in all of the Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Access. Ability to use these programs to lighten work load, develop reports and to automate procedures is very necessary.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
