Job description

Select Source Solutions is seeking an experienced Senior Scientific Software Engineer – AWS/Python to design, develop, and optimize cloud-based software solutions that support scientific data processing, large-scale data management, and application modernization.

In this role, you will work closely with scientists, software engineers, cloud architects, and system administrators to build reliable, scalable solutions using Python, AWS, CI/CD, and modern cloud technologies. This position is ideal for an experienced software professional who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and supporting data-intensive scientific environments.

What You Will Do

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain software supporting scientific data processing and archive workflows.
  • Develop and maintain Python-based applications, services, and automation tools.
  • Build, enhance, and support CI/CD pipelines for automated software development, testing, integration, and deployment.
  • Support the migration and modernization of scientific applications and workflows from on-premises infrastructure to Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Collaborate with scientists, software engineers, cloud architects, and system administrators to design and implement scalable cloud solutions.
  • Develop solutions for processing, storing, accessing, and managing large-scale scientific datasets using modern cloud technologies.
  • Troubleshoot application, workflow, infrastructure, and deployment issues to maintain reliable system performance.
  • Research, evaluate, and implement technologies that improve system performance, scalability, automation, security, and maintainability.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, software designs, architecture documentation, and operational procedures.
  • Participate in Agile/Scrum development activities, including sprint planning, technical discussions, code reviews, retrospectives, and team collaboration.
  • Apply software engineering, cloud development, and DevOps best practices throughout the software development lifecycle.

What You Will Bring

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
  • Eight (8) or more years of experience developing scientific, data-intensive, or large-scale software applications.
  • Strong experience developing applications and automation solutions using Python.
  • Experience developing, maintaining, or supporting CI/CD pipelines and software automation.
  • Experience developing or supporting applications within Amazon Web Services (AWS) environments.
  • Experience with cloud-native application development and infrastructure automation.
  • Familiarity with scientific data processing and large-scale data management.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum software development environments.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and scientific teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience migrating applications, datasets, or workflows from on-premises environments to AWS.
  • Experience with data lake architectures, data mesh concepts, or other modern cloud data management approaches.
  • Experience supporting large-scale archive systems, scientific data repositories, or data-intensive platforms.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) technologies such as Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or AWS CDK.
  • Experience using Git-based source control, branching strategies, and modern DevOps practices.
  • Experience supporting high-performance computing (HPC), distributed computing, or large-scale parallel processing environments.
  • Familiarity with AWS services used for compute, storage, data processing, automation, monitoring, and application deployment.
