What is the difference between Entry Level Registered Nurse vs Licensed Practical Nurse?

AspectEntry Level Registered NurseLicensed Practical Nurse
CredentialsRN license, Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)LPN/LVN license, diploma or certificate program
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, long-term care, community healthLong-term care facilities, clinics, hospitals, home health
Job ResponsibilitiesPatient assessments, care planning, administering medications, collaborating with healthcare teamBasic patient care, vital signs, medication administration, assisting RNs and doctors

Entry Level Registered Nurses typically hold an RN license and have a broader scope of practice, including patient assessments and care planning. Licensed Practical Nurses usually have an LPN/LVN license, focusing on basic patient care and assisting RNs. Both roles work in similar healthcare settings, but RNs generally have more responsibilities and higher earning potential.

What is an entry level registered nurse?

An entry level registered nurse (RN) is a healthcare professional who has recently completed their nursing education (typically an associate or bachelor's degree in nursing) and obtained licensure by passing the NCLEX-RN exam. Entry level RNs are responsible for providing direct patient care, administering medications, monitoring patient progress, and collaborating with other healthcare team members. They often work under the supervision of more experienced nurses and may be assigned to various clinical settings, such as hospitals, clinics, or long-term care facilities. This role is considered the starting point for a nursing career and provides foundational experience for future specialization or advancement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Registered Nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Registered Nurse, you need a nursing degree (ADN or BSN), valid RN licensure, and foundational skills in patient care, assessment, and clinical procedures. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), basic medical equipment, and hospital-specific software is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability help new nurses effectively support patients and collaborate with healthcare teams. These competencies ensure safe, high-quality care and help new nurses transition smoothly into the demands of clinical environments.

What types of mentorship and support can an entry level registered nurse expect during their first year on the job?

Entry level registered nurses typically receive structured support through orientation programs, preceptorships, and ongoing mentorship from experienced nurses. During the first year, new RNs often work closely with a designated preceptor who guides them through clinical procedures, documentation, and hospital protocols. Many healthcare organizations also offer regular check-ins, skills workshops, and access to nurse educators to help new nurses build confidence and address challenges. This collaborative environment helps ease the transition from school to practice and supports professional development.
