How much do registered nurse jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for registered nurse in the United States is $42.24, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $31.49 and $50.00 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a registered nurse?

Registered Nurses (RNs) are licensed healthcare professionals who provide patient care, support, and education in various medical settings such as hospitals, clinics, and community health organizations. They assess patient health problems and needs, develop and implement nursing care plans, and maintain medical records. RNs also administer medications and treatments, collaborate with doctors and other healthcare professionals, and advocate for patients’ health and well-being. To become an RN, individuals must complete an accredited nursing program and pass the NCLEX-RN licensing exam.

What does a registered nurse do?

Registered Nurses, also known as RNs, provide hands-on patient care. This includes developing a treatment plan for the patient, administering medications and injections, inserting catheters, performing physical exams, and reviewing and updating patient medical records. As you gain more experience as a Registered Nurse, you might also assume supervisory responsibilities over Licensed Practical Nurses and RNs with less job experience. In short, it’s your primary responsibility to identify and assess your patients’ healthcare needs and maintain or improve their medical outcomes to the best of your ability. You might find employment in diverse settings, including hospitals, physician offices, nursing homes, clinics, and telehealth platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a registered nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Registered Nurse, you need a strong foundation in clinical care, patient assessment, and medical knowledge, typically supported by a nursing degree and RN licensure. Proficiency with electronic health records (EHRs), patient monitoring equipment, and medication administration systems is essential. Empathy, adaptability, and clear communication are key soft skills for navigating patient needs and working within interdisciplinary teams. These skills ensure high-quality care, patient safety, and strong collaboration in fast-paced healthcare settings.

What are some common challenges registered nurses face when balancing patient care with administrative duties?

Registered Nurses often juggle direct patient care with various administrative responsibilities, such as updating medical records, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and managing shift reports. This balancing act can be challenging, especially during busy shifts or when staffing levels are low. Effective time management, prioritization, and strong communication skills are essential to ensure that quality patient care is delivered without neglecting important documentation and compliance tasks. Many hospitals provide training and supportive technology to help nurses streamline these processes.

What is the difference between Registered Nurse vs Licensed Practical Nurse?

AspectRegistered NurseLicensed Practical Nurse
CredentialsAssociate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), RN licenseDiploma or certificate from a practical nursing program, LPN license
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, community health, long-term careLong-term care facilities, clinics, hospitals, home health
Job ResponsibilitiesAssess patients, develop care plans, administer medications, coordinate careProvide basic patient care, monitor vital signs, assist with activities of daily living

Registered Nurses typically have more advanced training and responsibilities compared to Licensed Practical Nurses. RNs perform comprehensive assessments, develop care plans, and handle complex medical tasks, while LPNs focus on basic patient care and support under supervision. Both roles are essential in healthcare settings, but RNs generally have greater autonomy and scope of practice.

What kind of jobs can a registered nurse get?

Registered nurses can work in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, schools, and community health organizations. They may hold roles such as staff nurse, charge nurse, nurse educator, case manager, or nurse practitioner, often requiring specific certifications and clinical skills. These positions involve patient care, health education, and coordination of medical services.

Where do registered nurses get paid the most?

Registered nurses tend to earn the highest salaries in regions with high living costs and demand for healthcare professionals, such as certain metropolitan areas or states with advanced healthcare infrastructure. Factors like specialization, experience, and certifications can also influence salary levels across different locations.
