What is an entry level Agile Scrum Master?

An Entry Level Agile Scrum Master is a professional who facilitates Agile processes and supports a Scrum team, typically at the beginning of their career. Their main role is to ensure that the team follows Scrum practices, removes obstacles, and helps the team deliver high-quality products efficiently. They also act as a coach, guiding the team and stakeholders on Agile principles. Entry level Scrum Masters often work under the guidance of more experienced Agile practitioners and may help with administrative tasks, sprint planning, and daily stand-up meetings.

What are some common challenges entry level Agile Scrum Masters face when facilitating their first Scrum ceremonies?

Entry-level Agile Scrum Masters often encounter challenges such as encouraging team participation, managing time effectively during meetings, and ensuring that the Scrum ceremonies (like Daily Stand-ups, Sprint Planning, and Retrospectives) stay focused and productive. It's common to feel uncertain when guiding experienced team members or addressing impediments that arise. However, with practice, clear communication, and support from more experienced Scrum Masters or Agile coaches, new Scrum Masters can quickly build confidence and skill in facilitating these important team events.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level Agile Scrum Master, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Agile Scrum Master, you need a basic understanding of Scrum/Agile methodologies, project management principles, and ideally a Scrum Master certification (such as CSM or PSM). Familiarity with tools like Jira, Trello, or Azure DevOps is common, along with knowledge of Agile project tracking systems. Strong facilitation, communication, and problem-solving skills help you effectively guide teams and resolve impediments. These skills are crucial for fostering team collaboration, ensuring timely project delivery, and supporting continuous improvement in dynamic environments.

This role has a hybrid work schedule (2 days onsite) and we are considering candidates based in Portsmouth, NH, Boston, MA, Plano, TX, Indianapolis, IN.

Job Introduction:

The SAP Portfolio team is actively looking to add a Scrum Master II to support high-priority Finance Technology delivery across IFRS17, GRS / GRM, Malaysia GL, and related SAP platform initiatives. The candidate will be a member of the Portfolio Agile teams and is responsible for enabling teams to be more effective by applying the relevant Lean-Agile approach (Scrum, Kanban, XP, etc.) and cultivating an environment that supports Agility. This role will help restore dedicated delivery coverage across complex, integrated SAP workstreams by improving transparency, dependency management, backlog readiness, release planning, team health, and cross-team communication. The Scrum Master II will work closely with Product Owners, Engineering Managers, Technical Team Leads, Architects, business stakeholders, vendor partners, and other Scrum Masters to support predictable delivery, process improvement, and execution quality across business-critical SAP initiatives.

About the job:

  • Provides day-to-day Agile delivery leadership across SAP Portfolio workstreams, with initial focus on IFRS17, GRS / GRM, Malaysia GL, and related finance technology roadmap initiatives.
  • Coordinates across SAP platform, data integration, testing, security, architecture, vendor, product, and finance stakeholder groups to manage dependencies, risks, blockers, milestones, and delivery commitments.
  • Supports delivery readiness for production support, SAP / FPSL upgrade activity, country integrations, testing cycles, data conversion, reporting, allocations, go-live preparation, hypercare, and BAU transition needs.
  • Uses a pragmatic approach to guide the team by seeking to understand what team members want to achieve and helping them become more effective in an Agile context.
  • Comfortable experimenting with a variety of approaches based on need and fit. Promotes the use of and experimentation with quality and engineering practices.
  • Effective facilitation skills at the team level; remains neutral, applies conflict management, and establishes trust. Is comfortable having difficult conversations and actively coaches others on improving facilitation skills.
  • Possesses advanced understanding of Lean-Agile metrics, including health, value, flow, and quality, to help teams continually improve.
  • Improves visibility into portfolio-level Agile and engineering effectiveness metrics, including velocity, throughput, predictability, delivery ratios, cycle-time indicators, team health, and other measures used to support continuous improvement and senior leadership transparency.
  • Assesses the Agile/Scrum maturity of the team and coaches the team to higher levels of maturity.
Coaches teams and managers on the Agile mindset and behaviors. Has a deep understanding of the mechanics of the Agile framework or method and the ability to teach the specific roles, work products, and activities to team members and stakeholders.
  • Increases team knowledge of Agile/Lean topics, helping them understand why practices work, not just how. Observes and provides consistent, impactful feedback for team Agile development.
  • Understands the impact of change and supports the vision for change within the organization.
  • Develops a network of change agents to promote change and manage resistance to change.
  • Mentors less experienced Scrum Masters and other Lean-Agile leaders.
  • Actively seeks coaching and mentoring from more experienced Scrum Masters and coaches on Lean-Agile techniques and mindset, and guides others on their personal change and growth journey.
  • Takes an active role in the transition to and implementation of a scaling framework, with guidance from more experienced Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches.
  • Stays current with Agility industry trends and explores other perspectives by reading and contributing to blogs, consuming external media, and actively participating in internal and external Scrum/Agile events.
  • Acts as a catalyst to the Scrum Master community and the organization by sharing ideas through active participation in Scrum of Scrums sessions.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as business, computer science, humanities, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years of Scrum Master experience.
  • Scrum certification preferred.
  • Knowledge or training equivalent to advanced / second-level certifications from a reputable Lean-Agile organization is a plus but not required, such as PSM II, A-CSM, ICAgile Professional – Agile Team Facilitation (ICP-ATF), or ICAgile Professional – Agile Coaching (ICP-ACC).
  • Experience being on multiple Agile teams in a variety of different contexts.
  • Experience supporting complex technology portfolios, large-scale enterprise delivery, or finance / ERP / SAP-related initiatives preferred.
  • Prior SAP experience is a significant plus; experience with finance, accounting, or financial systems delivery is also a plus.
  • Experience working in a scaled Agile framework preferred.
  • Ability to partner effectively across product, engineering, architecture, business, testing, data, security, vendor, and finance stakeholder groups in a highly integrated delivery environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of business functions and extensive understanding of business operations, strategies, and objectives.
  • Track record of continued and recent education in Lean-Agile, including training, conferences, user groups, cohorts, self-study, or similar learning.
