Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced writers with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher salaries, especially in tech hubs or with advanced tools knowledge.

Is technical writing replaced by AI?

Technical writing as a profession involves creating clear, accurate documentation that often requires understanding complex concepts and context, which AI tools can assist but not fully replace. AI can automate routine tasks and generate drafts, but human technical writers are essential for ensuring accuracy, clarity, and technical correctness, especially in specialized fields like engineering. Skilled writers also interpret technical data and adapt content for different audiences, tasks that currently go beyond AI capabilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Engineering Technical Writer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Technical Writer, you need strong technical writing skills, a solid understanding of engineering concepts, and typically a degree in engineering, technical communication, or a related field. Familiarity with documentation tools like MadCap Flare, Adobe FrameMaker, and content management systems, as well as certifications such as CPTC (Certified Professional Technical Communicator), are often valuable. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to different audiences are standout soft skills. These competencies help ensure accurate, user-friendly documentation that supports engineering teams and end-users alike.

Can an engineer be a technical writer?

Yes, engineers often become technical writers because they have in-depth technical knowledge and understanding of complex concepts. Their background allows them to create accurate, clear documentation, manuals, and guides, often using tools like Markdown or XML. Strong communication skills and familiarity with technical standards are also important for success in this role.

What does an Engineering Technical Writer do?

Strong writing, research, and communication skills are essential for this role.

Is technical writer a high paying job?

Technical writers, including engineering technical writers, can earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, industry, and location. Typically, those with specialized knowledge in engineering or technical fields and strong writing skills tend to have higher earning potential. Certifications and proficiency with tools like XML or Adobe FrameMaker can also influence salary levels.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an Engineering Technical Writer?

Engineering Technical Writers are responsible each day for gathering information from engineers, developing and updating technical documentation such as user manuals, specifications, and training guides, and ensuring all materials meet company and industry standards. They often collaborate closely with subject matter experts, review technical drawings or prototypes, and use specialized authoring tools to produce clear, organized content. Depending on the project, you may also participate in team meetings, conduct user research to improve documentation, and help maintain version control for all documents. This role requires balancing technical accuracy with user accessibility, making it both dynamic and integral to engineering projects.

Job description

Engineering Technical Writer

AEC is a specialized electrical engineering and field services company that supports clients across industrial and utility environments. They focus on electrical testing, commissioning, and technical field services, helping ensure that critical electrical systems such as transformers, panels, cabling, and power equipment are operating safely and efficiently.

Their work is highly dependent on accurate technical reporting and fast turnaround times, which is a key part of the value they deliver to their customers. Because of this, AEC places strong emphasis on quality control, structured processes, and clear communication between field teams, engineering, and clients.

This is not a highly technical engineering design role. It is best suited for someone detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working in a structured, fast-paced environment where quality control and coordination are key.

You will play a critical role in ensuring that customer reports are delivered within a 5-business-day turnaround time. This role can be based at our Quebec City or Montreal office and reports directly to the QHSE Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and validate technical reports and field test data submitted by field technicians via PowerDB, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all information
  • Identify gaps, inconsistencies, or missing data and proactively follow up with technicians and internal teams to resolve issues
  • Maintain and update the report tracker daily to reflect current status, deadlines, and outstanding items across all active projects
  • Actively work to reduce the current 5-business-day report turnaround SLA through process improvements, better data quality at intake, and AI-assisted drafting
  • Ensure all reports meet strict quality standards before client delivery, maintaining AEC’s reporting SLA
  • Coordinate and communicate with cross-functional teams (field technicians, engineers, operations, and project teams) to keep reporting workflows on track
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback to field technicians in a positive, continuous-learning environment

What We’re Looking For

  • Highly detail-oriented with a strong focus on quality assurance and accuracy in all work outputs
  • Able to perform under pressure while effectively managing tight deadlines and multiple priorities
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve data or process gaps independently
  • Self-directed and organized — comfortable working independently
  • Comfortable collaborating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders across cross-functional teams
  • Strong written communication skills in English
  • PowerDB experience is an asset; training will be provided for the right candidate
  • Familiarity with Salesforce, Foxit PDF Editor, or Adobe Acrobat is a plus
  • Engineering background (Electrical/Power Systems) is a plus; new graduates or students with a relevant technical background and strong organizational skills are welcome to apply

Career Growth + Perks

  • AEC offers strong internal mobility and growth opportunities into roles such as: Engineering, Operations Specialist, Quality and Process Improvement functions, and more
  • Hybrid role — 4 days onsite / 1 day remote (flexibility may be adjusted based on performance)
  • Support for professional certifications and continued education
  • Participation in professional engineering societies (IEEE) — membership and local event costs reimbursed by AEC
  • Year-end discretionary bonus based on performance, safety, and customer feedback
  • Paid vacation, comprehensive insurance coverage, and Canadian retirement savings plan
  • Laptop and software provided by AEC
