What is an engineering manager?

Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams within an organization. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. Their role often involves a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to deliver successful engineering solutions on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager?

To thrive as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, typically with a degree in engineering and prior technical experience. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

How does an engineering manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

Job description

AMETEK’s Sensors and Fluid Management Systems (SFMS) business is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead a Product Engineering team in Wilmington, MA. This role has end‑to‑end responsibility for the Electric and Fluid Systems product lines, managing the full product lifecycle from concept through production and sustainment.
The Engineering Manager will drive innovation across new product development (NPD) and R&D initiatives while ensuring robust support of the installed product base through Sustaining Engineering and Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VAVE) activities. This leader will be accountable for maintaining compliance with quality management system requirements, including product development processes, configuration control, and product reliability standards.
As a key member of the engineering leadership team, this role will focus on building organizational capability, leveraging emerging technologies, and advancing scalable, disciplined engineering processes. Reporting to the Vice President of Technology and Product Management, the Engineering Manager will balance team leadership with hands‑on technical oversight, leading multiple engineering programs and customer engagements.
The ideal candidate is a results‑driven engineering leader with a proven track record in designing electromechanical sensing technologies and managing diverse project portfolios, including new product development, advanced R&D, sustaining engineering (field and factory support), and strategic initiatives.
Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the Product Engineering organization under the guidance of the Vice President, Technology and Product Management, ensuring alignment to SFMS strategic objectives and growth priorities.
  • Provide end‑to‑end engineering leadership across the product lifecycle, including New Product Development (NPD), advanced development/R&D, and sustaining engineering, ensuring high-quality, reliable, and manufacturable product solutions.
  • Drive the design, development, and continuous improvement of electromechanical sensing products, with a focus on innovation, product differentiation, and long‑term competitiveness.
  • Ensure disciplined engineering processes are applied, including design controls, configuration management, and product reliability practices, in compliance with quality management system requirements.
  • Build, develop, and coach a high-performing engineering team, fostering technical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement while strengthening organizational capability for future growth.
  • Champion the development and adoption of new technologies, tools, and methodologies to enable scalable engineering execution and sustain competitive advantage.
  • Partner with customers and cross‑functional teams to deliver robust solutions, ensuring strong technical engagement, responsiveness, and long‑term relationship development.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership across both technical execution and customer‑focused delivery, balancing hands‑on engineering involvement with effective team management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline required (advanced degree preferred).
  • 1-3 years leading engineering teams in a product development environment, with direct responsibility for performance management, talent development, and organizational capability building.
  • 5+ years of experience in the design and development of electromechanical sensing or fluid/electrical systems, with proven ownership of products across the full lifecycle (concept through production and sustainment).
  • Proven track record managing engineering project portfolios and workstreams, including New Product Development (NPD), advanced R&D, and sustaining engineering initiatives.
  • Experience operating within regulated industries (e.g., aerospace), with familiarity in FAA certification, product qualification, and compliance‑driven development processes strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with engineering design and analysis tools to support robust, data‑driven development and problem solving.

Due to the nature of SFMS programs and products, applicants must have the legal right to work in the US and additionally must be legally authorized to access export‑controlled information and source code.
