Job Summary

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking talented applicants qualified for a tenure-track assistant professor position in aerospace engineering. Under exceptional circumstances, highly qualified candidates at other ranks may receive consideration. The appointment is expected to begin September 1, 2027. The Department is committed to building a vibrant and inclusive academic community that reflects and advances the university’s strategic priorities.

The position is defined broadly across aerospace engineering, and scholars working across disciplines are encouraged. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to: propulsion, thermal management, and electrified/hybrid-electric propulsion; AI-augmented design (generative, learning) of aerospace structures or systems; robotics/controls, including nonlinear and multi-agent systems. We are committed to expanding beyond our traditional strengths, and we especially welcome candidates whose work builds bridges to regional industry and to our existing strengths in thermo-fluids, materials, advanced manufacturing, robotics, and remote sensing.

As a campus, college, and department with an increasingly diverse student body, we are looking for candidates who can operate effectively in a diverse faculty and student community, and who value collegiality, collaboration, achievement, and integrity. Essential Functions

The candidate is expected to develop an externally-funded research program in aerospace engineering, and develop and maintain an internationally recognized scholarly presence.

The candidate is expected to contribute to teaching existing graduate and undergraduate courses in aerospace and mechanical engineering, for example, aerodynamics, propulsion, flight dynamics and controls, or aerospace thermal systems, and will be encouraged to develop creative new curricula, including courses supporting the department's aerospace academic program.

The candidate is also expected to contribute meaningful service to their department, College, University and externally within their field through participation in committees, faculty governance, and activities that support the academic community.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field, or anticipate such a degree by September 1, 2027.

Salary Information

The University expects to pay within an approximate range between $79,350 and $129,272 for this position. Please note:

The low end of the pay range in all faculty searches at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the minimum salary for the rank included in the collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Massachusetts Society of Professors, UMass Amherst/MTA/NEA. Engineering TT starting salaries are typically well above this minimum.

The high end of the pay range reflects the 75th percentile for the department/discipline based on established, disciplinary-specific faculty compensation surveys.

The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on consideration of all relevant factors, including faculty rank and required or relevant factors, including faculty rank and required or relevant certifications, when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment.
