How much do engineer ii jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 23, 2026, the average yearly pay for engineer ii in the United States is $101,752.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $84,000.00 and $116,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an Engineer II?

An Engineer II is a mid-level engineering professional who typically has a few years of experience in their field and works under minimal supervision. They are responsible for designing, developing, testing, and implementing technical solutions, as well as troubleshooting and improving existing systems or products. Engineer II roles often require specialized technical knowledge and the ability to manage small projects or mentor junior staff. This position serves as a bridge between entry-level engineers and more senior engineering roles.

Can you make $500,000 as an electrical engineer?

Electrical engineers typically earn salaries below $200,000 annually, with high earners in specialized roles, management, or with extensive experience potentially reaching higher compensation. Achieving a $500,000 salary usually requires advanced skills, leadership positions, or working in high-paying industries such as aerospace or technology, often combined with additional certifications or advanced degrees.

Which engineering has the highest job opportunities?

Civil, software, and electrical engineering are among the fields with the highest job opportunities due to ongoing infrastructure development, technological growth, and demand for electrical systems. Software engineering, in particular, offers extensive opportunities across various industries, often requiring skills in programming languages and problem-solving. Job prospects are influenced by industry trends, technological advancements, and regional demand for specialized skills.

What is the difference between Engineer Ii vs Engineer I?

CriteriaEngineer IEngineer II
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field; entry-level certificationsBachelor's degree; 1-3 years of experience; may hold professional engineer (PE) license
Work EnvironmentSupportive team, supervised tasks, basic project responsibilitiesMore independent, handling complex tasks, project coordination
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in manufacturing, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering firmsUsed similarly, often as a mid-level role in engineering departments

Engineer I is an entry-level position requiring basic engineering credentials and limited experience, focusing on supporting projects. Engineer II typically has more experience, handles more complex tasks independently, and may hold additional certifications. The role progression reflects increased responsibility and expertise within the same industry and work environment.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an Engineer II, and how do they differ from entry-level engineering roles?

As an Engineer II, you’ll typically handle more complex assignments than entry-level engineers, often working on larger project components or leading small project teams. Your day-to-day tasks might include designing solutions, conducting analyses, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams such as product managers, technicians, and other engineers. You'll also likely be expected to mentor junior staff, contribute to process improvements, and ensure that project milestones are met. This role serves as a bridge between foundational learning and advanced leadership, offering increased autonomy while still providing guidance from senior engineers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineer II, and why are they important?

To excel as an Engineer II, you typically need a bachelor's degree in engineering, strong problem-solving abilities, and experience in your specific engineering discipline. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, or SolidWorks, and possibly relevant certifications like EIT or PE, is often required. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication set standout performers apart. These skills and qualifications ensure you can manage complex projects, collaborate across teams, and deliver high-quality technical solutions.

What is a test engineer II?

A Test Engineer II is a professional responsible for designing, developing, and executing tests to ensure the quality and functionality of products or systems. They often work with testing tools, scripting, and automation, and may require experience with specific testing frameworks or certifications. This role typically involves troubleshooting issues and collaborating with development teams to improve product reliability.

What jobs make $10,000 a month without a degree?

For an Engineer II, earning $10,000 a month typically requires extensive experience, specialized skills, or working in high-demand industries such as software development, oil and gas, or aerospace. Many high-paying engineering roles may require a degree, but some self-taught or certificate-based positions in fields like software engineering, cybersecurity, or technical sales can also reach this income level with proven expertise and strong performance.

Title and Summary
Software Engineer II
Job Title
Software Engineer II - Cloud Engineering
About the Role
We are looking for a Software Engineer II to join our Cloud Engineering team. This role is ideal for engineers who have moved beyond fundamentals and are ready to build, operate, and automate cloud platforms at scale, while continuing to grow depth in AWS, Kubernetes, and Infrastructure-as-Code.
You will work closely with senior and lead engineers to design, build, and maintain cloud-native infrastructure and platforms that support critical workloads. This is a hands-on engineering role - you will write code, ship infrastructure, troubleshoot real production issues, and learn how large-scale platforms are operated in an enterprise environment.
What You'll Do
Design, build, and maintain cloud infrastructure on AWS using Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform)
Contribute to the provisioning and operation of Kubernetes platforms (Amazon EKS, KOPS)
Support Linux-based systems (primarily Ubuntu) used across cloud environments
Collaborate on designing secure, scalable, and resilient cloud architectures
Write and maintain automation and tooling using Python, GoLang, or comparable languages
Assist with incident troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and platform stability improvements
Apply basic networking concepts (VPCs, subnets, routing, load balancing, security groups)
Partner with SRE, Security, and Application teams to deliver platform capabilities
Follow engineering best practices: code reviews, documentation, testing, and operational readiness
What We're Looking For
Required Skills & Experience
2-4 years of experience in software or cloud engineering
Hands-on experience with AWS (EC2, VPC, IAM, EKS or similar services)
Practical experience using Terraform (modules, state, deployments)
Working knowledge of Kubernetes (EKS, KOPS, or equivalent)
Strong fundamentals in Linux administration (Ubuntu preferred)
Understanding of basic networking concepts:
VPCs, CIDR ranges, subnets
Security groups, routing, DNS, load balancing
Programming experience in Python or GoLang (or strong proficiency in at least one language)
Experience working with Git-based workflows and CI/CD pipelines
Ability to troubleshoot issues logically and communicate clearly across teams
Nice to Have
Experience operating production Kubernetes clusters
Exposure to observability tools (logs, metrics, alerting)
Familiarity with cloud security concepts and IAM best practices
Experience building internal developer platforms or shared infrastructure
Interest in automation, platform engineering, and reliability practices
What Success Looks Like in This Role
You can independently deliver well-scoped cloud and infrastructure changes
Your Terraform code is reusable, reviewed, and production-ready
You contribute meaningfully to platform operations and incident resolution
You proactively learn from senior engineers and apply feedback quickly
You improve platforms not just by building, but by making them more reliable and usable
Why Join Cloud Engineering
Work on critical cloud platforms used by teams across the organization
Learn from experienced senior and lead engineers
Exposure to large-scale AWS and Kubernetes environments
Strong culture of automation, engineering rigor, and continuous improvement
