How much do engagement manager jobs pay per year?
What does an engagement manager do?
The primary job responsibilities of an engagement manager are to improve client engagement for a company by assisting with projects and helping solve problems. They play a pivotal role in forging a strong business-to-business relationship between their company and clients. Job duties include facilitating communication and resolving conflicts between the client and company. Engagement managers usually work as part of a team on client projects. The role fluctuates greatly depending on the specific client as well as client needs. In some usage, an engagement manager helps promote an organization through social media and other marketing activities.
What is the difference between Engagement Manager vs Project Manager?
| Aspect | Engagement Manager | Project Manager |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Focus | Client relationships and strategic engagement | Project planning and execution |
| Required Credentials | Relevant industry experience, often certifications like PMP or PMI | Project management certifications like PMP or Prince2 |
| Work Environment | Client-facing, consulting or service-based firms | Internal teams, project sites, or corporate offices |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Consulting, professional services, IT, marketing | Construction, IT, engineering, software development |
While both roles involve managing projects, Engagement Managers focus on maintaining client relationships and ensuring strategic alignment, whereas Project Managers concentrate on planning, executing, and delivering specific projects. Understanding these differences helps professionals choose the right career path or role based on their skills and interests.

Job description
The Director serves as the senior point of contact for the Hepatology/Immunology Strategic Engagement team, partnering closely with Brand Marketing, Medical, Sales Leadership, and other cross-functional stakeholders to generate and synthesize insights, optimize performance through data and analytics, and continuously improve the customer and external expert experience - all in strict adherence to GSK policies, SOPs, and governance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership & Planning
- Own the Hepatology/Immunology Strategic Engagement vision and plans, ensuring alignment with brand strategies, commercial objectives, and medical priorities across all approved indications and potential pipeline indications, partnering with Medical Affairs where engagement objectives intersect.
- Lead the design and evolution of integrated HCP engagement strategies that leverage congresses, P2P, and external expert engagements as high-impact, compliant touchpoints across the U.S. Specialty business.
2. Team Leadership & People Development
- Lead, manage, and develop a team of Strategic Engagement Marketing Managers and Hepatology/Immunology TLLs, providing clear direction, coaching, performance management, and talent development to build a high-performing, insight-driven team.
- Establish and maintain strong collaboration and clear ways of working within the team and across the broader Specialty business, ensuring seamless coordination between congress, P2P, and external expert activities.
3. HCP Engagement, Congress, and P2P Oversight
- Provide strategic direction and planning, managing the overall budget to provide the most complete congress plan for Hepatology/Immunology given the strategic imperatives of the portfolio and the capacity of the team. Make proposals and secure funding for a strategy that accounts for relevant congresses, makes trade-offs by congress tier and business priority, and becomes more efficient and effective over time.
- Oversee P2P program strategy and execution for Hepatology/Immunology, including speaker bureau management, speaker training, program execution, sales force support, and peer-to-peer education enabled through speaker recommendations, development, and operations support. Ensure compliance to overall budget and flex throughout the year based on current priorities.
4. External Expert Strategy & Insight Generation
- Set the strategy for Hepatology/Immunology External Expert engagement, guiding the TLL team in building and managing strategic relationships with external experts through meaningful, value-driven interactions across geographies and specialties.
- Develop and coach planning and execution of compliant external expert engagements and consulting, including advisory boards and executive interactions with commercial leadership, ensuring alignment with brand priorities and external expert needs. Hold team to a high standard and rapidly share best practices and implement new standards throughout the year.
- Ensure the team compliantly elicits, documents, and synthesizes clinical, competitive, and strategic insights from external experts, combining them with quantitative and qualitative data to inform brand strategy, resource allocation, and tactical planning.
5. Insights, Analytics & Performance Optimization
- Champion the use of data, analytics, customer experience insights, and external expert insights to measure performance of congress, P2P, and external expert activities; identify optimization opportunities; and drive a test-and-learn approach to innovation in HCP engagement.
- Translate insights into actionable recommendations for brand marketing and senior leadership, ensuring that strategic engagement activities continuously evolve to meet HCP and external expert needs.
6. Cross-Functional & Enterprise Leadership
- Serve as the primary Hepatology/Immunology Strategic Engagement leader and point of contact for Sr. Directors, Brand Leads, Medical, Sales VP, Legal, Compliance, Regulatory, and other cross-functional partners, enabling integrated, compliant engagement approaches across channels and tactics.
- Coordinate closely with Hepatology/Immunology field leadership and other key stakeholders to ensure geographic alignment, effective deployment of resources, and consistent pull-through of strategy across the U.S.
7. Governance, Risk Management & Compliance
- Ensure all congress, P2P, and external expert activities are executed in full compliance with GSK policies, SOPs, and governance requirements, maintaining strong ethical standards across the team.
- Proactively identify and manage risks associated with Strategic Engagement activities, ensuring appropriate mitigation plans are in place and adhered to by internal and external partners.
8. Financial & Operational Management
- Oversee forecasting, budgeting, and financial tracking across congress, P2P, and external expert activities for Hepatology/Immunology brands; optimize spend based on performance, insights, and business priorities.
- Lead relationships with agencies, suppliers, and vendors supporting engagement execution, ensuring timely, high-quality delivery of logistics, production, on-site support, and operational excellence.
- Ensure robust project and program management discipline across the team to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and deliver consistently against timelines and quality expectations.
Why You?

- Experience leading customer-facing teams to strong performance - including field sales, TLL, or medical/clinical roles - within pharma or biotech, with Hepatology[KH1.1], Immunology or GI experience in at least one of these functions.
- Experience working cross-functionally with Brand, Medical, Sales, Legal, Compliance, Regulatory, and Marketing partners.
- Experience managing agencies, vendors, and complex budgets, with advanced project management and organizational skills.
- Experience developing data-driven strategies and communicate insights to executive audiences (live and virtual) to influence decision-making.
- Leadership experience, including trust-based relationship building, emotional intelligence, and executive presence.
- Ability to travel, including nights and weekends, to support congresses, P2P programs, and external expert engagements across the U.S.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree preferred (e.g., MBA, Master's degree, or equivalent).
- Deep Hepatology/Immunology marketplace experience, including understanding of patients, customers, competitors, and business drivers, and the ability to engage effectively with HCPs and external experts across the organization.
