EXTERNAL ENGAGEMENT SR. MANAGER, DEVICE SUPPLYWhat you will do

Let's do this. Let's change the world. In this vital role you will lead day-to-day supplier relationship management and execution for external manufacturing partners supporting device supply. The role will be accountable for ensuring reliable supply, technical and operational issue resolution, project execution, budget/proposal governance, and cross-functional alignment across Amgen, supplier sites, quality, supply chain, engineering, procurement, finance, and manufacturing network partners.

This role requires a strong technical and operational leader who can operate independently across complex supplier relationships, manage competing business priorities, and drive timely decision-making on supplier performance, capacity, component readiness, validation, packaging, technical changes, and commercial proposals.

Supplier relationship and operational leadership:

  • Own and manage critical supplier relationships for assigned external partners, acting as the primary External Supply point of contact for operational execution, escalation, and business continuity.
  • Ownership of projects to install capacity and capabilities at External Partner locations to meet Amgen projected demand
  • Lead structured engagement with suppliers to ensure delivery of supply, project, quality, technical, and commercial commitments.
  • Drive resolution of supplier-related issues affecting device availability.
  • Establish clear priorities with suppliers and internal stakeholders, ensuring urgent business needs are understood, resourced, and progressed to closure.

External manufacturing and technical execution:

  • Lead cross-functional execution for external manufacturing activities related to device manufacturing and supply.
  • Coordinate with engineering, quality, supply chain, CPO, manufacturing sites, and supplier technical teams to resolve manufacturing and product/process issues.
  • Support technical evaluations, impact assessments, change controls, specification updates, validation strategies, and supplier manufacturing investigations.
  • Ensure supplier decisions are grounded in appropriate technical rationale, GMP expectations, business priorities, and risk management principles.

Project, budget, and proposal management:

  • Manage supplier proposals, purchase requisitions, budget requests, and commercial follow-up for assigned programs and external partners.
  • Prepare and progress business cases for supplier spend, scrap proposals, spare parts, tooling, packaging solutions, and project-related expenditure.
  • Partner with finance, procurement, and leadership to secure approvals, track commitments, and ensure spend is aligned to program priorities.
  • Maintain visibility of open supplier proposals, financial risks, and urgent budget needs, escalating appropriately when business decisions are required.

Supply continuity and capacity planning:

  • Support capacity planning, supply risk assessment, and mitigation planning for external manufacturing operations.
  • Work with suppliers and internal teams to ensure component availability, production readiness, shipment planning, and inventory decisions support business and patient supply needs.
  • Identify risks to supply continuity and lead development of recovery or mitigation plans.
  • Support prioritization of activities across multiple suppliers, products, and business-critical programs.

Cross-functional leadership:

  • Lead and influence cross-functional teams without direct authority, including supplier teams, quality, engineering, procurement, supply chain, finance, manufacturing sites, and program leadership.
  • Represent External Supply in internal working teams, supplier governance forums, project reviews, and escalation meetings.
  • Communicate clearly with senior stakeholders on status, risks, decisions needed, and recommended actions.
  • Coach and support team members or project contributors where needed, helping build capability in supplier engagement, technical problem solving, and business ownership.

Compliance and quality mindset:

  • Ensure supplier activities are conducted in line with Amgen quality expectations, GMP requirements, procurement processes, and applicable procedures.
  • Support investigations, deviations, impact assessments, specification updates, and change-related activity as needed.
  • Maintain strong documentation, decision rationale, and follow-through on actions.

  • High school diploma / GED and 12 years of supplier relationship experience OR
  • Associate's degree and 10 years of supplier relationship experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree and 6 years of supplier relationship experience OR
  • Master's degree and 4 years of supplier relationship experience OR
  • Doctorate degree and 2 years of supplier relationship experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, supply chain, manufacturing, quality, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, combination product, packaging, or regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Background in supplier management, external manufacturing, technical operations, engineering, quality, supply chain, or manufacturing support.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical and operational issues across multiple functions and external partners.
  • Project Management experience.
  • Experience managing supplier proposals, purchase requisitions, budget requests, and business-case justification.
  • Strong understanding of GMP, change control, deviations/investigations, validation, technical documentation, and regulated supply operations.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
