What does an Employment Counsel do?

An Employment Counsel is a legal professional who advises businesses on employment laws, workplace policies, and compliance with labor regulations. They help draft employment contracts, handle workplace disputes, and ensure that company policies align with local, state, and federal employment laws. They may also represent employers in legal disputes related to wrongful termination, discrimination, or wage disputes. Their goal is to minimize legal risks and foster a compliant and fair workplace.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Employment Counsel?

To thrive as Employment Counsel, you need a strong background in labor and employment law, typically supported by a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and bar admission. Familiarity with legal research databases (such as Westlaw or LexisNexis), HR information systems, and relevant compliance certifications is important. Exceptional analytical thinking, negotiation, and communication skills help Employment Counsel provide effective guidance and resolve workplace disputes. These competencies ensure legal compliance, mitigate risks, and foster a fair and productive work environment.

What are some typical challenges faced by Employment Counsel in their daily work?

Employment Counsel often navigate complex and evolving employment laws, address sensitive workplace issues such as discrimination or wrongful termination, and work to balance organizational goals with legal compliance. They may handle multiple cases simultaneously, requiring excellent time management and prioritization skills. Collaborative work with HR, management, and sometimes external legal representatives is common, as is the need to communicate clearly with non-legal stakeholders. Proactively addressing potential issues and staying updated on legislative changes are also key challenges that make this role both dynamic and rewarding.

  • International employment law experience a plus.
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience with California employment laws.
  • Ability to work at a fast pace while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across the business.
  • Business‑minded and strategic, with the ability to provide practical legal advice that supports operational goals while managing legal risk.
Benefits
  • Flight Benefits – exclusive travel privileges for yourself and your family with Delta Air Lines.
  • Paid holidays and paid time off.
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance.
