What does a Senior Employment Counsel do?

A Senior Employment Counsel is a seasoned legal professional who advises organizations on complex employment law matters. Their responsibilities include ensuring compliance with labor regulations, managing workplace investigations, drafting and reviewing employment policies, and representing the company in employment-related disputes. They often serve as a key advisor to HR and executive teams on issues such as discrimination, wrongful termination, wage and hour laws, and employee benefits. Their expertise helps organizations mitigate legal risks and foster a fair, compliant work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior Employment Counsel when advising on multi-jurisdictional employment matters?

Senior Employment Counsel often encounter challenges related to navigating differing employment laws, workplace regulations, and cultural expectations across various regions. Staying updated on legal changes in multiple jurisdictions and ensuring company policies remain compliant can be complex. Additionally, collaborating with local counsel and coordinating consistent HR practices company-wide requires strong communication and organizational skills. Addressing these challenges effectively is essential for mitigating legal risks and supporting global business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Employment Counsel, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Employment Counsel, you need deep expertise in employment law, strong analytical skills, and typically a Juris Doctor (JD) degree with bar admission. Familiarity with HR compliance systems, legal research databases (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), and relevant certifications such as SPHR or SHRM-SCP can be advantageous. Exceptional negotiation, communication, and advisory skills are vital for managing sensitive workplace issues and partnering with leadership. These capabilities ensure effective risk management, compliance, and strategic support for organizational goals.

OVERVIEW

ALO is seeking a mid-to-senior employment attorney to manage employment counseling, contract, and policy needs as we expand in North America. This position is a great opportunity for an experienced attorney looking to take ownership of a broad array of employment issues in a fast-paced, growing company.

As Senior Employment Counsel, you will serve as a key legal advisor on all aspects of employment law, policy, immigration and compliance across our U.S. and Canada operations. You will work closely with ALO's Director of Employment, HR, Retail, and Payroll teams to ensure that our company remains compliant with local, state, federal, and international labor laws, while also addressing a wide range of legal matters related to our workforce. You will also mentor and support other members of the legal team on employment matters.

The ideal candidate has six to ten years of experience with employment advice and counseling at a top employment law firm and in-house.

The position is an in-office role based in Beverly Hills, CA.

  • Advise HR and Retail teams on wage and hour compliance, including timekeeping, overtime, meal and rest periods, sick time and paid leave.
  • Revise and update company-wide employment policies, agreements, notices and communications to ensure alignment with legal requirements and best practices.
  • Partner with HR, Payroll, and People Operations teams to ensure compliant implementation of employment laws, policies, and programs.
  • Monitor changes in employment laws in North America, with a focus on key retail markets.
  • Support the drafting and implementation of international policies and employment contracts.
  • Provide training and guidance to managers on compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws and regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • J.D. from a top tier law school.
  • Active bar membership in California.
  • 6-10 years of experience in employment law at a top law firm and/or company.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. federal wage and hour laws across several jurisdictions.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian employment laws, with working knowledge of differences across provinces.
  • Practical, business-minded approach with the ability to provide clear, actionable guidance in a fast-paced setting.
  • Ability to balance many projects simultaneously and complete tasks accurately, on schedule and with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience supporting a retail workforce in Canada or Europe is a strong plus. Retail, hospitality, or another consumer-facing environment experience is preferred.
  • Willingness to take initiative and work flexible hours to accommodate collaboration with Canadian and Europe-based teams.
