What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Elevator Supervisor, and why are they important?
What Does an Elevator Supervisor Do?
As an elevator supervisor, your responsibilities are to oversee service mechanics and repair teams during the installation and maintenance of elevator equipment for either residential or commercial buildings. You are expected to regularly visit clients to inspect elevators for any needed repair work and ensure the proper completion of maintenance tasks and tests. You are in charge of scheduling and organizing all repair work and dispatching mechanics who answer night calls. You are in charge of acquiring all necessary equipment and parts. Other duties include managing employees in any continuing education and safety classes, following up with clients after work is completed, and keeping accurate job site records and maintenance schedules. If needed, you also provide mechanics with troubleshooting and advanced technical assistance.
What is the difference between Elevator Supervisor vs Elevator Technician?
| Aspect | Elevator Supervisor | Elevator Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Certifications | Elevator safety certifications, supervisory licenses | Elevator mechanic licenses, technical certifications |
| Work Environment | Oversees elevator operations, manages staff, inspects equipment | Performs maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting on elevators |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Building management, construction, facilities maintenance | Elevator manufacturing, maintenance companies, building services |
Elevator Supervisors oversee elevator operations and staff, ensuring safety and compliance, while Elevator Technicians focus on repairing and maintaining elevator systems. Both roles require safety certifications, but Supervisors typically have additional managerial credentials. The Supervisor role involves more oversight and administrative duties, whereas Technicians are hands-on with technical repairs.
