Summary
Serving more than 300,000 adults and children each year, the Connecticut Science Center is the state's premier destination for informal science learning, a top tourist attraction, a hub for teacher training, and one of the state's foremost resources for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The Outreach Education Programs Associate will join our larger Programs Team for the summer season with the primary purpose of delivering high-quality student and youth programming in the communities we serve-at schools, camps, onsite, and more. They provide enriching learning experiences for Connecticut's youth that focus on building a deeper understanding of STEM topics and concepts and strengthening the necessary skills and practices needed to be successful in the academic and future workforce careers. The Seasonal Outreach Associate is responsible for bringing science content alive for all. The person will help educate and excite visitors of all ages in an awe-inspiring manner.
This position works with the public in a dynamic museum setting to translate a multitude of science principles into easily understood concepts for visitors of all ages. This position involves a high degree of public speaking, a strong stage presence, and the capacity for a solid understanding of science concepts.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Present engaging, live demonstrations, programs, and shows to the general public, youth groups, and adults onsite and offsite.
- Personally facilitate effective one-on-few museum experiences for all visitors by helping them engage with exhibits, demonstrations, and science content throughout the science center.
Facilitate live virtual programs to school groups and youth groups PreK-12
- Set up and clean-up of live science demonstrations, shows, and youth programs.
- Learn exhibit content, programs, and activities that are grounded in science, technology, engineering, and health-related topics and ensure that all content is presented accurately.
- Proactively engage visitors and initiate conversations to provide an exceptional visitor experience.
- Adapt programs and science content to reach diverse audiences of varying age, background, and knowledge levels.
- Facilitate programming for special events, including evenings and weekends.
- Personalize engagements, connect content to STEM career pathways, and make science relevant to everyday life for all visitors.
- Organize and maintain live demonstration and virtual program materials. Help maintain inventory and keep all materials in an orderly manner.
Support the Community Inclusion goals of the Science Center by ensuring that educational content and programs support all individuals in their development of skills and knowledge.
- Use appropriate positive reinforcement and humor to encourage visitor participation and build relationships.
