Job description

ABOUT THE MASSACHUSETTS TECHNOLOGY COLLABORATIVE:

As a unique public agency, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MassTech) supports the business formation and growth in the state's technology sector, helping Massachusetts lead the global digital economy. The Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI) is a division of MassTech and serves as the central broadband office for the state.

WHY JOIN OUR TEAM:

Join our team of dedicated professionals to help drive our mission and make a meaningful impact in the communities we serve. MBI is at the forefront of a transformational, once-in-a-generation opportunity to close the digital divide. Through historic federal investment, MBI is developing and managing programs that will expand access to affordable and reliable broadband service, create new jobs and economic opportunities, enable increased access to healthcare services, support enriching educational experiences of students, and improve quality of life for our residents. MBI is leading the charge to achieve the vision of closing the digital divide, and we are looking for people with the dedication and passion to make this vision a reality.

In Massachusetts, over 98% of people have access to broadband, ranking 5th in the U.S. However, there is still mission-critical work to be done to close remaining gaps, address affordability, and expand access to internet-connected devices and digital literacy training. MBI is leading the state's strategy to achieve 100% universal service and meaningful adoption of the internet to operate in our ever-growing digital world.

THE ROLE:

MBI is seeking an intern to help out with a special project. This role will have the opportunity to support MBI's Technical Director with a project to document the new network equipment that has been installed on MassTech's MassBroadband 123 (MB123) middle-mile network. This position will assist the Technical Director during inspections of the 23 Points of Interconnection (POIs), take photos of the equipment and POI rooms, and help develop new documentation for all of the new equipment that was installed at the POIs as part of the MB123's 2025 Network Equipment Refresh project.

MBI completed construction of an open-access, middle-mile fiber-optic network in early 2014. The network stretches across 120+ western and central Massachusetts communities and was the first step in bringing high-speed internet to all parts of the state. It is used as a building block to design and build last mile connections to residents and businesses in the regions still lacking high-speed internet services. After 10+ years of operation, MassTech made a capital investment to refresh the network equipment to ensure that the network can provide carrier-grade services to customers. This is a unique opportunity to join a collaborative team and document the new network equipment that was recently deployed on the MB123 network.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support MBI's Technical Director with the documentation of the MB123 network post the Network Equipment Refresh project.
  • Participate in POI inspections.
  • Take photos of POI rooms and the equipment located within and around POIs.
  • Support the Technical Director with network documentation in MS Visio and MS Excel formats.
  • Attend meetings as required.
