Job description

Overview:
The Commissioning Technician is a field-based technical role responsible for supporting the execution of commissioning activities on utility-scale solar or BESS projects. This position performs hands-on testing, inspection, and documentation of system performance in accordance with approved commissioning plans and procedures.
The role works under the direction of the Commissioning Lead Technician and Commissioning Manager and contributes to safe, efficient, and high-quality project execution and completion.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support day-to-day commissioning activities in accordance with approved commissioning plans, procedures, and schedules
  • Perform commissioning and acceptance testing of PV systems, including DC and AC circuits, inverters/PCS, MV and LV systems, and balance-of-plant equipment
  • Execute equipment design verification and assist in documenting results in commissioning logs and software platforms
  • Collect and record testing data for activities such as:
  • IV curve tracing
  • VOC testing
  • Insulation resistance testing
  • Grounding verification
  • VLF testing
  • Thermal inspections
  • Identify and report deficiencies, punch list items, and system issues to the Commissioning Lead Technician
  • Assist in troubleshooting electrical, controls, and communication issues under direction of senior team members
  • Maintain accurate and complete field documentation, including daily reports, test forms, and deficiency logs
  • Support coordination with construction teams to ensure systems are ready for commissioning activities
  • Participate in commissioning meetings, including daily coordination and safety briefings.
  • Follow all safety requirements, including job hazard analyses (JHA), lockout/tagout (LOTO), and electrical safety procedures
  • Maintain and properly use test equipment and tools
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by providing feedback on field execution challenges and inefficiencies

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
Required
• Strong working knowledge of PV systems, including DC collection systems, combiner boxes, inverters, trackers, and AC collection systems.
• 1-3+ years of experience in solar PV construction, electrical installation, or commissioning activities
• Demonstrated hands-on experience commissioning utility-scale solar projects.
• Proven ability to lead field crews and direct daily commissioning activities without direct supervision.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, schematics, and equipment manuals.
• Familiarity with standard electrical testing equipment and commissioning tools
• Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately document testing and field activities
• Effective communication skills for coordination with field teams and supervisors
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel extensively, including extended field assignments.
Preferred
• Associate's degree, technical institute certification, or Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Renewable Energy, or a related field
• Electrical license (Journeyman or higher, role dependent by state/project requirements)
• NABCEP PV Certification (or ability to obtain)
• Experience supporting commissioning of utility-scale solar projects
• Exposure to medium-voltage (MV) systems, substations, or protection & controls
• Familiarity with SCADA, DAS, or plant communication systems
• OSHA 10/30, NFPA 70E, or equivalent safety certifications
Physical Requirements/Work Environment:
• Primarily field-based role supporting active construction and commissioning sites.
• Frequent travel to project sites with extended on-site presence.
• Ability to walk large job sites, climb ladders, work in varying weather conditions, and lift tools or equipment as required.
• Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment and comply with all site-specific safety requirements.
