Position Overview
Monroe High School is seeking a qualified and motivated individual to serve as the Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Coach. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the Varsity Head Coach and Athletic Department to develop student-athletes and support the overall goals, expectations, and philosophy of the Monroe High School boys basketball program.
The JV Coach will focus on developing basketball fundamentals, preparing student-athletes for advancement to the varsity level, promoting academic achievement, and maintaining a positive team culture centered on teamwork, accountability, sportsmanship, and personal growth.
Qualifications
The successful candidate should demonstrate the following qualifications:
- Previous basketball playing or coaching experience is highly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, strategies, rules, techniques, and player development.
- Demonstrated skills in organization, practice planning, instruction, and game preparation.
- Ability to teach and reinforce basketball fundamentals while developing student-athletes for future participation at the varsity level.
- Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to motivate and positively influence student-athletes.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the Varsity Head Coach and other members of the boys basketball coaching staff.
- Demonstrated ability to promote a competitive environment while maintaining appropriate sportsmanship and professional conduct.
- Knowledge of and willingness to follow and enforce all Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) rules, Monroe Public Schools policies, Athletic Department expectations, and applicable codes of conduct.
- Commitment to maintaining high expectations for the academic achievement, attendance, behavior, and eligibility of student-athletes.
- Ability to establish positive and professional relationships with students, parents/guardians, administrators, teachers, coaches, officials, and other district employees.
- Ability to represent Monroe High School and Monroe Public Schools in a positive and professional manner.
Essential Responsibilities
The Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Coach will:
- Plan and conduct organized, purposeful, and developmentally appropriate practices in coordination with the overall boys basketball program.
- Teach and reinforce basketball fundamentals, techniques, strategies, teamwork, and game preparation.
- Develop student-athletes at both the individual and team levels with an emphasis on preparing players for advancement to the varsity program.
- Work closely with the Varsity Head Coach to maintain consistency in program philosophy, expectations, terminology, fundamentals, and player development.
- Establish and communicate clear expectations for student-athletes regarding attendance, academics, behavior, sportsmanship, practices, competitions, and team responsibilities.
- Promote an environment that emphasizes teamwork, accountability, respect, discipline, character, and good sportsmanship.
- Monitor and support student-athlete academic performance and eligibility and reinforce the expectation that academics remain a priority.
- Ensure student-athletes comply with all MHSAA regulations, District policies, Athletic Department procedures, and applicable codes of conduct.
- Maintain appropriate communication with student-athletes, families, the Varsity Head Coach, school administration, and the Athletic Department.
- Properly supervise student-athletes during practices, competitions, travel, and other team activities.
- Assist with the proper care, inventory, distribution, collection, and storage of uniforms, equipment, and supplies.
- Model professional behavior and appropriate sportsmanship at all times and hold student-athletes to the same standard.
- Support the Varsity Head Coach and overall boys basketball program through program activities, meetings, events, and other responsibilities as appropriate.
- Work cooperatively and professionally with administrators, teachers, coaches, officials, maintenance/custodial staff, and other district employees.
- Perform other duties related to the boys basketball program as assigned by the Varsity Head Coach, Athletic Director, or District administration.
Expectations
The Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Coach is expected to support the development of a cohesive and successful Monroe High School boys basketball program. The coach should provide student-athletes with the instruction, encouragement, discipline, and opportunities necessary to grow as basketball players, students, teammates, and representatives of Monroe High School.
The JV program should prepare student-athletes for future varsity competition while maintaining high standards for academics, effort, accountability, teamwork, respect, and sportsmanship.
