Company Overview:
The Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 (AIU8) is one of the 29 intermediate units that provides a vast array of services for member school districts, including student services, training and technical assistance, online learning, and customized programs and services. IU8 includes four counties comprised of 35 school districts (approximately 98 schools) and five Career Technical Centers. Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 serves approximately 47,000 students across four counties within 3500 square miles. Our service area includes four counties: Blair, Somerset, Bedford, and Cambria. We have five different office locations within our service area: Altoona, Duncansville, Ebensburg, Richland, and Somerset. AIU8 has opportunities for everyone, and our service area offers a broad range of living environments from rural to more densely populated city areas.
Job Summary:
The WOL Supervisors oversee theVirtual Learning Specialists and Facilitators, Virtual Learning Instructional Assistants, and others as determined by the Director of the WOL Institute. Supervisors provide leadership and development of instructional services to schools in the areas of curriculum, digital programming, and continuous school improvement. They assist educators with designing and developing digital and hybrid curricula and creating and identifying innovative instructional strategies and resources. They assume responsibility for program budgets and coordination of services.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise Virtual Learning Facilitators and Virtual Assistants in IU8 virtual programs.
  • Supports the growth and development of the Virtual Learning Specialist(s)
  • Supports, with the Director of WOL, the recruitment and retention of visionary, dedicated staff for WOL.
  • Supports and advocates for WOL school and district partners.
  • Support the innovation and design of virtual and hybrid courses.
  • Leads the continuous improvement of the supports and services, including business development, of the WOL program.
  • Participate in the pursuit of grants for the purpose of innovating in teaching and Assisting learning.
  • Leads the web page design and social media development.
  • Assist with planning course improvement, assessments, or projects.
  • Collaborate with Educational Programs and Services on various initiatives as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with educators to design and develop standards-aligned, research-based instruction, including rubrics, assessments, etc.
  • Conduct appropriate needs assessments to determine customer goals.
  • Conduct professional learning activities for groups and individual consultations.
  • Coordinate and facilitate planning meetings and professional learning for assigned or newly-created programs and services.
  • Design and present professional learning opportunities to schools.
  • Disseminate information about innovative teaching and learning resources.
  • Maintain virtual resources for customers using the WOL website, social media, and other media as appropriate, etc.
  • Model innovative teaching and learning strategies in the classroom and/or virtual environment.
  • Offer expertise on and assist in the implementation of innovative teaching and learning technologies and/or environments.
  • Provide virtual curriculum services to districts.
  • Provide effective communication with other administrators, teachers, parents, and community members, and others as appropriate regarding programs.
  • Provide information on virtual/distance/distributed learning technologies and how to use them.
  • Provide information on innovative classroom technologies and how to use them.
  • Research grant opportunities, and develop, and implement them as appropriate.
  • Serve as a resource for VLSs and VLFs to guide student use of technology to customize their learning and/or learning environment.
  • Understand and analyze data to advise the WOL team on instructional and business decisions to meet the goals of schools, as well as state and federal requirements.
  • Assume any other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of the World of Learning Institute

Requirements:
  • A Master's Degree, certification as a Curriculum and Instructional Supervisor, Principal K-12, Letter of Eligibility, or Instructional Technology Specialist certificate (or in an approved program) as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
  • Current and acceptable clearances: Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse History) Act 114 (PDE Fingerprinting), PDE6004 (Arrest & Conviction), and Act 168 (PA Sexual Misconduct Background).
  • Upon hire, all new employees must obtain a certificate of medical examination as well as a tuberculosis test as required under Chapter 14 of the Public School Code, 24 P.s. 14-1416, 14-1418; 22 Pa Code 49.12(b) (regarding education); and 28 Pa Code 23.44 (regarding health and safety).
