Basic Job Functions:
Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.
Plan, design, and improve chemical manufacturing processes for direct iron reduction steel production. Utilize energy, kinetics, and heat transfer principles to design, analyze, and optimize efficient chemical manufacturing processes for combustible and hydrogen-rich gas streams. Research and analyze hydrogen release evolution during Direct Reduction Iron ("DRI") handling, passivation and storage to optimize the passivation process to ensure safe conditions, required material quality and cost effectiveness. Develop and adjust process flow diagrams (PFDs) for DRI production process materials handling and cement coating station. Troubleshoot problems with DRI processes, identifying root causes and implementing corrective and preventive actions. Analyze hydrogen-rich gas systems and develop thermodynamic equations to establish/simulate equilibrium variances for DRI production. Perform root cause failure analysis for cement coating station, core DRI plant (DRI shaft furnace, CO2 absorption plant), passivation process, and various other plant processes and design proper solutions. Develop and monitor industrial trials for process control improvement projects and analyze trial data using PI vision software. Analyze and improve quality control procedures to ensure the on-time quality information generation, upgrade lab equipment, and optimize costs of quality control. Reduce operational costs, minimize raw material by products generation, and improve recycling rates, specifically DRI fines generation and dust reuse. Develop material/energy balances and perform calculations to improve operational efficiency. Stay up to date with new process technologies, tools, design practices, methods, and concepts to ensure its implementation at Nucor Steel Louisiana. Train and develop others Nucor's teammates, suppliers and contractors. 15% international and domestic travel required for meetings, trainings, and consultations with other divisions/factories.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidate must have a Bachelors or foreign equivalent degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering and 2 years of experience in planning, designing, and improving chemical manufacturing processes for direct iron reduction steel production. Must have experience in: Analyzing hydrogen-rich gas systems and developing thermodynamic equations to establish/simulate equilibrium variances for DRI production. Developing and adjusting process flow diagrams (PFDs) for DRI production process materials handling and cement coating station. Researching and analyzing hydrogen release evolution during DRI handling, passivation and storage to optimize the passivation process. Developing and monitoring industrial trials for process control improvement projects and analyze trial data using PI vision software, dataPARC, PARCview and/or SCADA. 15% international and domestic travel required for meetings, trainings, and consultations with other divisions/factories.
