What does a Director Hydrogen Engineer do?

A Director Hydrogen Engineer is responsible for overseeing the design, development, and implementation of hydrogen technologies within an organization. This role involves leading engineering teams, managing large-scale hydrogen production or infrastructure projects, and ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards. The Director also collaborates with executives, researchers, and partners to drive innovation and support the company’s strategic goals in the hydrogen energy sector.

What is the difference between Director Hydrogen Engineer vs Hydrogen Project Manager?

AspectDirector Hydrogen EngineerHydrogen Project Manager
CredentialsEngineering degree, professional engineering license, industry certificationsEngineering or related degree, project management certifications (PMP)
Work EnvironmentStrategic planning, R&D, overseeing engineering teamsProject execution, scheduling, stakeholder coordination
Industry UsageLeadership roles in hydrogen technology developmentManaging specific hydrogen projects from initiation to completion

The main difference is that the Director Hydrogen Engineer focuses on strategic leadership, technical oversight, and long-term planning in hydrogen engineering, while the Hydrogen Project Manager handles day-to-day project execution, timelines, and team coordination. Both roles require technical background, but the director typically has broader responsibilities and higher-level decision-making authority.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Director Hydrogen Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director Hydrogen Engineer, you need advanced expertise in chemical or mechanical engineering, deep knowledge of hydrogen energy systems, and a relevant engineering degree, often with professional certification. Familiarity with industry-standard modeling software, hydrogen production technologies, and safety compliance systems is typically required. Exceptional leadership, project management, and communication skills are vital for guiding teams and collaborating with stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for developing safe, efficient hydrogen solutions and driving innovation in the growing clean energy sector.

What are some common challenges faced by a Director Hydrogen Engineer when scaling up hydrogen production projects?

A Director Hydrogen Engineer often encounters challenges related to balancing project scalability with safety, regulatory compliance, and cost-effectiveness. As projects grow, coordinating multidisciplinary teams and ensuring seamless integration of new technologies become increasingly complex. Navigating evolving environmental regulations and securing reliable supply chains for specialized equipment are also frequent hurdles. Success in the role depends on strong project management skills, effective stakeholder communication, and staying up to date with industry advancements.

Lead Process Engineer - Fuel Cracking & Hydrogen Systems

Newlight

Alameda, CA • On-site

Job description

Newlight’s mission is to accelerate the maritime industry’s transition to sustainable energy by making clean shipping affordable, starting with today’s fleet. We retrofit existing engines with a hydrogen-diesel dual-fuel “plugin” that reduces fuel consumption and emissions.

We’re seeking a Lead Process Engineer to own the end-to-end ammonia/Methanol cracking process, from NH₃ feed to engine-grade hydrogen. You will define performance targets, build process models, specify equipment, and translate system requirements into vendor-ready designs.

This role is ideal for a senior process engineer who thrives on thermodynamics, gas systems, and turning flowsheets into deployable hardware.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Define the complete process chain: NH₃ vaporization and preheat, cracking reactor, heat recovery, NH₃ slip mitigation, drying/filtration, compression, and buffering.
  • Build mass and energy balances and steady-state process models (Aspen/HYSYS preferred; Python or spreadsheets acceptable).
  • Specify product gas targets (H₂ purity, NH₃ slip, dew point), turndown ratios, ramp rates, and operating envelopes.
  • Author equipment specifications for reactor, heater, heat exchangers, separators, scrubbers/adsorbers, compressors, valves, and instrumentation.
  • Develop PFDs and P&IDs; maintain process datasheets and instrument lists.
  • Lead RFQs with vendors, evaluate bids, and support technical sourcing decisions.
  • Define utility loads (electrical, thermal, cooling) and system performance assumptions.
  • Collaborate closely with Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, and Safety on integrated system design, HAZID/HAZOP, and commissioning readiness.

Requirements We Seek

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • 3+ years in process or chemical engineering, ideally with high-temperature gas systems.
  • Hands-on experience with catalyst reactors, furnaces/heaters, and gas cleanup technologies (adsorption, scrubbing, PSA, membranes).
  • Strong ability to translate process requirements into vendor-ready equipment datasheets.
  • Experience producing PFDs, P&IDs, and process documentation.
  • Clear technical communication and comfort working cross-functionally and on-site.

Ways To Stand Out

  • Direct experience with ammonia/Methanol or hydrogen systems.
  • Marine integration or shipboard process systems.
  • Hazardous-area design exposure.
  • Python-based modeling or custom process tools.
  • Prior ownership of commissioning or performance validation of gas-process equipment.

Why Join Newlight?

  • Own the system logic: You will define how ammoniaMethanol becomes clean hydrogen at sea.
  • Build something real: Take models and turn them into operating vessels.
  • Shape the roadmap: Influence architecture as we scale from pilots to fleets.
  • Mission with momentum: Deliver decarbonization on today’s ships, not future concepts.
