What does a Senior Hydrogen Engineer do?

A Senior Hydrogen Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing systems and processes related to hydrogen production, storage, distribution, and utilization. They often lead projects focused on advancing hydrogen technologies, such as fuel cells or electrolyzers, to support clean energy initiatives. Their work involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance, and solving complex engineering challenges to improve efficiency and sustainability in hydrogen applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Hydrogen Engineer, and why are they important?

A Senior Hydrogen Engineer typically requires an advanced degree in chemical, mechanical, or process engineering, along with substantial experience in hydrogen production, storage, and distribution technologies. Familiarity with industry-standard simulation tools like Aspen HYSYS, process safety systems, and relevant certifications such as Chartered Engineer status are highly valued. Strong project management, analytical thinking, and leadership skills set top performers apart in this field. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and innovative hydrogen solutions in a rapidly evolving energy sector.

What is the difference between Senior Hydrogen Engineer vs Hydrogen Project Engineer?

AspectSenior Hydrogen EngineerHydrogen Project Engineer

Job description

Title:ย Hydrogen Ground Systems Liaison
Company: Heven AeroTech
Location: Sterling, Virginia
FLSA:ย Exempt

About Our Company:

At Heven AeroTech (Heven), we don't just believe in the power of people-we build our success on it. As a recognized leader in hydrogen-powered drones, we've earned recognition for creating a workplace where innovation thrives, collaboration is second nature, and every employee feels valued. At Heven, your voice matters, your ideas are heard, and your contributions make a tangible impact as you grow through hands-on experience and collaboration across the team.

Role Summary:
We are seeking a Hydrogen Ground Systems Liaison to support the deployment, demonstration, and field sustainment of our expeditionary hydrogen generation and fueling systems. This is a hands-on, customer-facing role that sits at the intersection of hydrogen technology, UAS operations, and military field environments. You will serve as the primary technical interface between Heven AeroTech's hydrogen engineering team and DoD end users - training operators, supporting demonstrations, and ensuring our systems perform reliably in austere and forward-deployed settings.

This role is ideal for a candidate with a background in military logistics, special operations support, or defense systems fielding who is excited to be at the leading edge of hydrogen-powered UAV technology.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute live demonstrations of Heven AeroTech hydrogen ground systems for DoD customers, program offices, and operational units either as stand-alone systems or with UAS operations.
  • Set up, operate, and safely shut down expeditionary hydrogen generation and fueling equipment (electrolyzers, compressors, storage, dispensing systems) in field and range environments
  • Document demonstration results, anomalies, and customer feedback; provide written trip reports to the engineering and program management teams
  • Develop and deliver hydrogen safety and operations training for DoD end users, operators, and maintainers
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of operator-level training materials including quick-reference cards, SOPs, and hands-on practical exercises
  • Ensure training content is consistent with NFPA 2, OSHA, applicable DoD safety standards, and Heven AeroTech's internal hydrogen safety plan
  • Track trainee certifications and maintain training records
  • Serve as the day-to-day technical point of contact for assigned DoD customers and program offices regarding hydrogen ground systems
  • Gather and communicate customer requirements, operational feedback, and field observations back to the Heven AeroTech engineering team
  • Support program reviews, site visits, and government-led evaluations as the hydrogen ground systems subject matter expert
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with military counterparts, contracting officers, and program managers
  • Work with hydrogen equipment vendors to understand best practices and maintenance procedures.
  • Provide on-site technical support and troubleshooting for hydrogen generation, storage, and fueling systems at customer locations, including CONUS and potential OCONUS deployments
  • Perform scheduled maintenance, inspections, and pre/post-operation checks on expeditionary hydrogen systems per established procedures
  • Identify recurring field issues and work with the engineering team to develop corrective actions and procedure updates
  • Maintain accurate field service records, equipment logs, and maintenance documentation

Qualifications & Experience:

Required:

  • 3-7 years of experience in defense systems fielding, military logistics, special operations support, or related technical field operations role
  • Experience operating and maintaining field equipment in austere or expeditionary environments
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance (active clearance preferred)
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 50%, including potential short-notice OCONUS travel
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable briefing military audiences from operator to senior leadership level
  • Valid U.S. driver's license; ability to operate ground support vehicles and trailers

Preferred:

  • Prior U.S. military service, particularly in a logistics, engineer, aviation support, or special operations MOS/AFSC
