Hydrogen Engineer Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hydrogen Engineer Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hydrogen Engineer Manager, you need a robust background in chemical, mechanical, or electrical engineering, with experience in hydrogen production, storage, or fuel cell technology, often supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional certification (e.g., PE). Familiarity with industry standards, process simulation software (such as Aspen HYSYS), and safety management systems is typically required. Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills are essential for leading multidisciplinary teams and coordinating complex projects. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and innovative hydrogen solutions while meeting regulatory and business objectives in a rapidly evolving sector.

What are some of the typical challenges faced by a Hydrogen Engineer Manager when leading multidisciplinary teams?

Hydrogen Engineer Managers often oversee projects that require coordination between diverse teams, such as chemical engineers, safety specialists, and project managers. One common challenge is ensuring clear communication and alignment across these disciplines, especially when integrating new hydrogen technologies into existing systems. Balancing technical requirements, regulatory compliance, and timelines can be complex, but strong leadership and proactive problem-solving help keep projects on track. Additionally, staying updated on evolving industry standards and safety protocols is crucial for successful team management.

What does a Hydrogen Engineer Manager do?

A Hydrogen Engineer Manager oversees teams of engineers working on projects related to hydrogen production, storage, and utilization. They are responsible for managing project timelines, ensuring safety standards, and coordinating research and development efforts to improve hydrogen technologies. Their role often includes collaborating with other departments, managing budgets, and staying updated with industry regulations and technological advancements. Ultimately, they play a critical role in advancing the adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source.

Job description

Electric Hydrogen's mission is to make molecules to decarbonize our world! Our outstanding people are our most important asset and will allow us to deliver hydrogen from renewable electrolysis for heavy industry, at prices below fossil fuels.
We are looking for a Field Engineer for a Texas-based remote role responsible for owning field operations at Electric Hydrogen's West Texas (Pecos) plant. This position serves as the primary on-site technical resource, ensuring reliable operation, successful commissioning, and ongoing maintenance of the EH2 plant, while also providing support for other EH2 sites as needed.
You will work with a high degree of autonomy, supporting field execution while partnering closely with operations, engineering, and product teams. This role includes hands-on troubleshooting, customer/site engagement, and continuous improvement of field operations.
This role requires significant travel during the 2026 commissioning phase, including extended on-site assignments at the Pecos plant. Travel demands are expected to decrease following customer handover in 2027, transitioning primarily to preventive maintenance and reactive support needs. Work schedules may include extended hours, weekends, holiday coverage, and urgent off-hours support as needed. Remote work flexibility is available when not on-site. All travel-related expenses, including lodging and meals, are covered by Electric Hydrogen.
Primary Responsibilities
• Own operational readiness for the Pecos plant ahead of customer handover
• Own plant performance and uptime during customer operations
• Support installation, commissioning, and startup activities prior to customer handover
• Troubleshoot operational issues and lead root cause analysis (RCA) efforts
• Serve as the primary on-site field engineering contact for Electric Hydrogen's West Texas customer site
• Respond to urgent operational issues to minimize downtime and restore plant functionality
• Generate reports and present plant performance updates during regular customer meetings
• Act as an escalation point for field-related issues, coordinating cross-functional support when required
• Execute preventive, reactive, and predictive maintenance activities alongside customer and contract technicians
• Manage inventory, spare parts, replacement cycles, and equipment logistics
• Partner with supply chain and operations teams to improve spare parts strategies and lead times
• Ensure proper storage, traceability, and readiness of field tools and maintenance materials
• Utilize CMMS systems for maintenance planning, work order management, backlog tracking, maintenance records, and asset tracking
• Monitor plant health and improve diagnostic capabilities
• Develop and refine SOPs, checklists, training materials, and field service procedures
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering required
• 3+ years of field engineering or similar hands-on experience supporting industrial or process equipment
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Experience within energy, electrochemical, hydrogen, or industrial systems environments
• Experience supporting commissioning and maintenance activities
• Familiarity with CMMS systems, spare parts planning, inventory management, and logistics coordination
• Strong customer-facing communication and relationship management skills
• Based in Texas or willing to relocate to Texas to support the high on-site presence required during the commissioning phase (2026 through early 2027)
