The main difference between a Hydrogen Engineer Manager and a Hydrogen Engineer lies in their focus. The manager oversees projects, leads teams, and handles strategic planning, while the engineer concentrates on technical design, testing, and operational tasks. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ in responsibilities and scope within the hydrogen industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hydrogen Engineer Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hydrogen Engineer Manager, you need a robust background in chemical, mechanical, or electrical engineering, with experience in hydrogen production, storage, or fuel cell technology, often supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional certification (e.g., PE). Familiarity with industry standards, process simulation software (such as Aspen HYSYS), and safety management systems is typically required. Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills are essential for leading multidisciplinary teams and coordinating complex projects. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and innovative hydrogen solutions while meeting regulatory and business objectives in a rapidly evolving sector.

What are some of the typical challenges faced by a Hydrogen Engineer Manager when leading multidisciplinary teams?

Hydrogen Engineer Managers often oversee projects that require coordination between diverse teams, such as chemical engineers, safety specialists, and project managers. One common challenge is ensuring clear communication and alignment across these disciplines, especially when integrating new hydrogen technologies into existing systems. Balancing technical requirements, regulatory compliance, and timelines can be complex, but strong leadership and proactive problem-solving help keep projects on track. Additionally, staying updated on evolving industry standards and safety protocols is crucial for successful team management.

What does a Hydrogen Engineer Manager do?

A Hydrogen Engineer Manager oversees teams of engineers working on projects related to hydrogen production, storage, and utilization. They are responsible for managing project timelines, ensuring safety standards, and coordinating research and development efforts to improve hydrogen technologies. Their role often includes collaborating with other departments, managing budgets, and staying updated with industry regulations and technological advancements. Ultimately, they play a critical role in advancing the adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source.

Job description

Electric Hydrogen's mission is to make molecules to decarbonize our world! Our outstanding people are our most important asset and will allow us to deliver hydrogen from renewable electrolysis for heavy industry, at prices below fossil fuels.
We are seeking a highly motivated and hands-on Senior Supplier Quality Engineer to play a critical role in driving supplier quality, component reliability, and manufacturing readiness as we scale our electrolyzer manufacturing operations.
In this role, you will lead supplier quality initiatives across supplier qualification, auditing, incoming inspection, non-conformance management, and supplier development. You will work closely with Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Operations teams to ensure supplier performance, product quality, and manufacturing readiness as the company continues to grow.
The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced startup environment, enjoys solving complex quality challenges, and is excited to operate in a highly cross-functional and execution-focused role.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead supplier quality activities including supplier qualification, onboarding, audits, and ongoing performance management
  • Develop and maintain supplier quality requirements, scorecards, and corrective action processes
  • Partner closely with suppliers to drive root cause investigations and corrective actions for quality issues
  • Establish incoming inspection plans, sampling methodologies, and acceptance criteria for critical components
  • Monitor supplier quality performance metrics, including defects, yield, responsiveness, and corrective action effectiveness
  • Support supplier process validation, APQP, PPAP, and manufacturing readiness activities where applicable
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain teams to ensure component traceability, risk mitigation, and supplier scalability
  • Partner with Manufacturing and Engineering teams to resolve production quality issues and improve process capability
  • Lead failure analysis, root cause investigations, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions
  • Analyze quality data and trends to identify risks, improve performance, and drive continuous improvement initiatives
  • Participate in design reviews and manufacturability discussions to ensure quality is built into products and processes from the outset
  • Support the implementation and execution of core quality processes, including NCR, IQC, MRB, and CAPA
  • Contribute to building a strong culture of quality, accountability, and operational excellence across the organization

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in supplier quality, manufacturing quality, or quality engineering roles
  • Demonstrated experience managing supplier quality performance within a hardware manufacturing environment
  • Strong knowledge of APQP, PPAP, PFMEA, SPC, control plans, and process validation methodologies
  • Experience with supplier quality systems, incoming inspection programs, NCR, MRB, and CAPA processes
  • Experience conducting supplier audits and driving supplier corrective actions
  • Experience working within ISO 9001-compliant environments
  • Strong problem-solving skills and experience applying structured root cause analysis methodologies
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a fast-paced, high-growth startup environment
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers and global supplier networks
  • Experience supporting electrochemical, hydrogen, energy, industrial equipment, or related systems
  • Professional certifications such as ASQ CSQP, CQE, CQA, Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt, or equivalent quality certifications
