What Do Directors Do?

A director is a low-level executive in a company or organization that is responsible for a particular project, region, or division. A director of a company is employed to manage the day-to-day business activities of a group or division within an organization. There are different types of directors, but they are all tasked with leading others and meeting the goals of the organization. Directors plan, execute and manage to reach a goal. For example, the sales director would oversee the sales for a particular product or area. An HR director would be tasked with screening applicants and hiring the right candidates, making sure to comply with all employment laws and settling any personnel issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director, you need strategic leadership, business acumen, and a proven track record in management, often supported by an advanced degree such as an MBA. Familiarity with budgeting tools, project management software, and data analytics systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, decision-making, and team-building abilities help Directors inspire teams and drive organizational goals. These skills are crucial for setting vision, ensuring operational efficiency, and achieving sustained business success.

How does a Director typically balance strategic planning with day-to-day operational oversight?

Directors are responsible for setting long-term strategies while ensuring the smooth execution of daily operations. They achieve this balance by delegating routine tasks to managers, regularly reviewing progress through meetings and reports, and adjusting plans based on organizational needs. Successful Directors maintain open communication with their teams, foster collaboration across departments, and stay adaptable to changes in business priorities. This dual focus allows Directors to drive both immediate results and sustainable growth.

What are Directors and what do they do?

Directors are high-level executives responsible for overseeing a department, division, or entire organization. They set strategic goals, develop policies, and ensure that their teams execute projects effectively to meet company objectives. Directors often collaborate with other senior leaders, manage budgets, and lead decision-making processes. Their leadership is crucial for driving growth, maintaining operational efficiency, and fostering a positive organizational culture.

Adams County Communications Center Authority (ADCOM911) is seeking an Executive Director to lead this Colorado public safety communications center, which serves approximately 350,000 residents along the northern edge of the Denver metropolitan area. Located in Commerce City, ADCOM's service area spans roughly 1,130 square miles of unincorporated Adams County and multiple municipalities-a diverse and rapidly growing region offering a dynamic mix of urban energy, suburban neighborhoods, agricultural lands, and open space.ย
ADCOM911ย
Established in 1975, ADCOM911 provides dispatch services to eight public safety agencies within Adams County, CO: Adams County Sheriff's Office, Brighton Police Department, Commerce City Police Department, Northglenn Police Department, South Adams County Fire Department, Adams County Fire Rescue, Greater Brighton Fire Protection District, and North Metro Fire Rescue District. The agency is governed by a Board of Directors with each member agency appointing one representative to the Board-typically the agency's chief. ย ADCOM has 96 authorized positions and handled 432,015 calls for service in 2025.ย
THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides strategic leadership and financial and administrative oversight for ADCOM. Operating with significant independence, the Executive Director implements Board goals while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The role encompasses oversight of all emergency dispatch communications, technology, and personnel, ensuring rapid,ย accurate, and coordinated responses to public safety incidents.ย
WHY APPLYย

ADCOM911 offers a compelling opportunity for an experienced, forward-thinking executive to lead one of the region's most critical public-safety assets.ย As a standalone, self-contained regional emergency communications authority, the organizationย is in a strong position and poised for continued growth and improvement, with solid finances, dedicated and mission-driven staff, and CALEA accreditation underway. The next Executive Director will have genuine latitude to shape the future direction of the organization. ADCOM911 has significant opportunity to modernize technology, build long-termย strategy, strengthen relationships, and foster a high-performing culture that matches the importance of the mission. For a leader who believes in public service, thrives in high-impact environments, and wants to leave a lasting regional legacy, ADCOM911ย representsย a unique and meaningful opportunity.ย
