What is a Direct Hire job?

A Direct Hire job is a permanent position where a company hires an employee directly onto their payroll, typically with full benefits. Unlike temporary or contract roles, direct hires are long-term employees from day one. This type of hiring is often used for critical or highly skilled positions where companies seek long-term commitment. The process can take longer than temporary staffing but offers more stability for candidates. Employers often work with staffing agencies to source and screen direct hire candidates.

What are the main advantages of accepting a Direct Hire position compared to temporary or contract roles?

Accepting a Direct Hire position means you become a permanent employee of the hiring company from day one, rather than working through a staffing agency or on a short-term contract. This often brings greater job security, access to company benefits like health insurance and retirement plans, and clearer paths for career progression. Direct hires are more likely to participate in company training, professional development opportunities, and have the chance to build long-term relationships within the team. This structure can lead to more stability and investment in your growth compared to temporary or contract work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Direct Hire position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Direct Hire position, candidates need a strong background relevant to the specific job function, a proven work history, and the ability to quickly adapt to a new organizational culture. Familiarity with industry-standard tools, software, or certifications applicable to the chosen profession is often required. Strong communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently or with minimal onboarding help individuals stand out in such roles. These qualities are essential because direct hire employees are expected to make an immediate impact without the extensive training period typical in temporary or contract roles.

Maintenance Supervisor โ€“ Direct Hire | Garrett, Indiana
In partnership with Openwork

Openwork is partnering with a respected and well-established industrial manufacturer to find a driven, hands-on Maintenance Supervisor for their Garrett, Indiana facility. This is a direct hire leadership role offering the opportunity to shape maintenance strategy, build a high-performing team, and directly impact production success.
If youโ€™re a seasoned leader with a strong technical foundation, proven supervisory experience, and a commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous improvementโ€”this role was built for you.

About the Company
This manufacturer has a long-standing reputation for quality, innovation, and operational excellence. With a deep commitment to safety and employee development, they operate with a strong team culture and a forward-thinking mindset. This facility produces essential industrial products that support critical industries, and your leadership will help ensure equipment, processes, and people are running at their best.

About the Role
As Maintenance Supervisor, you will oversee all aspects of maintenance operations for the facility. Youโ€™ll be responsible for equipment performance, preventive and predictive maintenance execution, capital project planning, and team leadership. This role is highly collaborativeโ€”requiring coordination with production, engineering, and leadership teams to maintain high uptime and operational efficiency.
This position is ideal for a candidate who thrives in a fast-paced, high-accountability environment and wants to lead by example.

What Youโ€™ll Take On
  • Establish and lead safety-first maintenance practices that protect people and equipment.
  • Build and oversee proactive maintenance strategies that reduce unplanned downtime and improve system reliability.
  • Tackle complex technical challenges involving electrical systems, controls, hydraulics, and more.
  • Lead capital improvement projectsโ€”planning, budgeting, coordinating, and delivering.
  • Develop, mentor, and lead a skilled maintenance team, fostering growth and accountability.
  • Manage maintenance budgets with a sharp eye on performance, cost, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate closely with production, engineering, and plant leadership to align maintenance with operational goals.
  • Keep records clean, organized, and completeโ€”because performance is built on data.
What You Bring With You
  • A technical degree in mechanical or electrical disciplines; a bachelorโ€™s degree in engineering is a plus.
  • At least 10 years of hands-on leadership in maintenance or production within industrial manufacturing.
  • Deep technical knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical infrastructure.
  • Proficiency with PLCs, control systems, schematics, and equipment documentation.
  • Strong communication skills and a calm, confident presence on the floor and in meetings.
  • Experience managing budgets, capital projects, and performance KPIs.
  • A mindset rooted in continuous improvement, accountability, and cross-functional collaboration.
What Youโ€™ll Help Create
  • A maintenance team thatโ€™s skilled, respected, and always ready.
  • Equipment that runs longer, performs better, and rarely surprises anyone.
  • Processes that keep improving because people are invested in how they work.
  • A plant environment where expectations are clear, and excellence is the norm.
Why This Role, Why Now?
  • Direct hire: Join the team from day one with full benefits, stability, and long-term potential.
  • Respected employer: This company is known for doing things rightโ€”for customers, for employees, and for the community.
  • Local impact: Lead a facility thatโ€™s essential to regional and national industrial operations.
  • Room to grow: Your ideas and your leadership will be heard, and your results will be recognized.
Youโ€™ve built your skills. Youโ€™ve proven your leadership. Now itโ€™s time to lead where it matters most.
