Job description
Job Level: Director
Home District/Group: Kiewit Industrial Business Development
Department: Business Development & Proposals
Market: Industrial
Employment Type: Full Time
Position Overview
The Business Development Director is responsible for identifying, developing, and capturing engineering, procurement, construction (EPC), design-build, and construction opportunities within the Mining, Minerals & Metals market across the United States. This role is focused on new client development, expanding existing client relationships, and building a healthy pipeline of future opportunities that support Kiewit's long-term growth objectives.
The ideal candidate is a highly motivated sales and business development professional with a proven track record of opening doors, growing strategic accounts, and contributing to revenue growth. Experience in mining, minerals, metals, industrial, or heavy construction is preferred, but candidates with strong business development results in adjacent markets will also be considered.
This individual will serve as a primary relationship manager for assigned clients and target accounts, working closely with operational, engineering, estimating, and executive leadership teams to develop and execute pursuit strategies. The role requires strong commercial instincts, an ability to understand client organizations and decision-making processes, and the discipline to move opportunities through the sales funnel from initial contact through award.
As part of Kiewit's Get Work process, the Business Development Director collaborates with proposal, marketing, engineering, and construction professionals to position Kiewit for success. A key measure of success is the ability to establish trusted client relationships, identify future capital programs early, and position Kiewit as a partner of choice for engineering and construction services.
District Overview
The Kiewit Energy marketing, creative, and proposal team provides get-work services to multiple markets including power generation, transmission and distribution, renewables, industrial, oil and gas, and water/wastewater. We focus on winning work with high-quality, client-focused sales strategies through creative communication techniques. Our team brings vast experience and expertise to all projects we support across the company.
Location
Phoenix, Arizona is the preferred location; however, candidates located throughout the Western United States will be considered.
This position requires approximately 50% travel. Travel will include client meetings, industry conferences, project visits, and internal business development meetings throughout North America. Flexibility and responsiveness to client needs and opportunity timelines are essential.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute business development strategies to grow the Mining, Minerals & Metals market.
- Build, maintain, and expand relationships with new and existing clients from executive leadership through operational and project-level stakeholders.
- Identify, qualify, and progress opportunities through the sales funnel while maintaining an accurate and active pipeline.
- Develop strategic account plans for key clients and target accounts, including growth targets, relationship strategies, and pursuit priorities.
- Conduct client and market research to understand capital plans, organizational structures, decision-making processes, procurement strategies, and competitive dynamics.
- Lead client meetings, presentations, and relationship-building activities to position Kiewit for future work.
- Generate new business through proactive outreach, networking, referrals, industry engagement, and targeted prospecting.
- Collaborate with operations, engineering, estimating, and executive leadership to develop win strategies and capture plans.
- Participate in go/no-go discussions and support business case development for strategic pursuits.
- Serve as the Voice of the Customer throughout the pursuit process and provide insight into client priorities, concerns, and decision factors.
- Support proposal development by contributing client intelligence, competitive positioning, value propositions, and sales messaging.
- Maintain accurate, timely information in the CRM platform and communicate pipeline status, activity, and forecasts regularly.
- Attend and actively participate in industry conferences, trade associations, and networking events to strengthen market presence and generate opportunities.
- Monitor market trends, competitor activity, and emerging opportunities within the Mining, Minerals & Metals sector.
- Partner with marketing to develop client-facing materials, presentations, thought leadership content, and pursuit collateral.
- Support client satisfaction and account management during project execution to strengthen relationships and support repeat business.
Management Responsibilities
This position requires a high degree of influence and collaboration with engineering, construction, operations, executive leadership, and marketing personnel but does not include direct supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of successful business development, sales, account management, or client relationship experience.
- Demonstrated track record of opening new business, growing strategic accounts, and achieving revenue growth objectives.
- Experience in mining, minerals, metals, industrial, engineering, construction, EPC, or related markets preferred but not required.
- Strong relationship-building, networking, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain executive-level client relationships.
- Experience leading complex sales pursuits and coordinating cross-functional pursuit teams.
- Strong understanding of consultative selling, strategic account management, and territory planning.
- Excellent presentation, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
- Self-starter with strong organization skills and the ability to manage multiple opportunities simultaneously.
- Experience using CRM systems and maintaining accurate opportunity forecasting.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively throughout the Western United States and North America as required.
Other Requirements:
- Regular, reliable attendance
- Work productively and meet deadlines timely
- Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others individually or in a team environment.
- Perform work safely and effectively. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies.
