How does a Developer Marketing professional typically collaborate with engineering and product teams?

Developer Marketing professionals work closely with engineering and product teams to gain a deep understanding of technical products and developer needs. They frequently participate in product planning meetings, provide feedback on documentation, and help shape messaging that resonates with technical audiences. This collaboration ensures that marketing initiatives accurately reflect product capabilities and address real-world developer pain points. Open communication and mutual respect are key to building trust and creating effective campaigns.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Developer Marketing professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developer Marketing professional, you need a blend of technical understanding, marketing expertise, and experience working with or for developer communities, often supported by a degree in marketing, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with developer tools, analytics platforms, content management systems, and sometimes certifications in digital marketing are typically required. Exceptional communication, community-building, and empathy skills help you connect authentically with developer audiences and advocate for their needs. These skills ensure you can effectively translate technical products into compelling value propositions and foster strong engagement within developer ecosystems.

What is the difference between Developer Marketing vs Product Marketing?

AspectDeveloper MarketingProduct Marketing
Primary FocusEngaging developers and technical audiences to adopt and advocate for productsPositioning, messaging, and promoting products to target markets
Required SkillsTechnical knowledge, developer community engagement, content creation for technical audiencesMarket research, messaging, competitive analysis, customer insights
Work EnvironmentTech companies, startups, developer communitiesTech companies, product teams, marketing departments

Developer Marketing and Product Marketing share overlapping skills but differ in focus. Developer Marketing concentrates on engaging technical audiences and fostering developer advocacy, while Product Marketing centers on positioning and promoting products to broader markets. Both roles are vital in tech companies but serve distinct strategic purposes.

What is Developer Marketing?

Developer Marketing refers to the strategies and activities aimed at engaging and supporting software developers as a key audience. It involves promoting products, tools, or platforms to developers, often by providing technical content, community events, and resources that help them succeed. Unlike traditional marketing, Developer Marketing focuses on building trust and offering real value, such as documentation, tutorials, or APIs. The goal is to foster adoption and advocacy among developers, who often influence technology decisions within organizations.

Job description

Frontend Developer, Marketing

We are seeking a skilled Frontend Developer with expertise in building and optimizing websites using the Yext platform. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in modern frontend development practices and hands-on experience with Yext’s website-building tools, including Yext Pages, to create responsive, high-performing, and SEO-optimized websites. You will collaborate with designers, backend developers, and marketing teams to deliver exceptional digital experiences for our clients.

Heartland Dental is the nation's largest dental support organization, providing non-clinical administrative support services to more than 3,000 supported doctors across 39 states and the District of Columbia in 1,900+ dental offices. Each Heartland Dental supported office is unique to the community and the patients they serve. Supported doctors are the clinical leaders of their practice, retain full clinical autonomy, and establish their own care philosophies. All Heartland Dental supported doctors are united by a common goal: delivering the highest quality dental care and patient experiences.

Below is an overview of the duties and responsibilities you would take on in this role:

  • Develop and maintain responsive, user-friendly websites using the Yext platform, including Yext Pages and related tools.
  • Implement pixel-perfect designs from wireframes or mockups, ensuring cross-browser compatibility and mobile responsiveness.
  • Optimize websites for performance, accessibility, and SEO, leveraging Yext’s built-in features for local search and structured data.
  • Integrate Yext websites with third-party APIs, CMS platforms, and other external systems as needed.
  • Collaborate with UX/UI designers to translate designs into functional frontend code using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks (e.g., React, Vue.js).
  • Customize Yext templates and components to align with client branding and functional requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to website functionality, performance, or Yext-specific configurations.
  • Stay up-to-date with Yext platform updates, frontend development trends, and best practices for web performance and accessibility.
  • Work closely with backend developers to ensure seamless integration of frontend code with server-side logic.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and deployment processes to ensure high-quality deliverables.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Web Development, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 2+ years of professional frontend development experience, with at least 1 year working with Yext websites or similar platforms.
  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with experience in modern frameworks like React, Vue.js, or similar.
  • Hands-on experience with Yext Pages and familiarity with Yext’s ecosystem (e.g., Knowledge Graph, Listings, Reviews).
  • Strong understanding of responsive design principles, cross-browser compatibility, and web accessibility standards (WCAG).
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and modern development workflows.
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices and how to leverage Yext’s tools for local SEO optimization.
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs and integrating frontend code with backend systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with Yext certifications (e.g., Yext Certified Developer or similar).
  • Familiarity with other CMS platforms (e.g., WordPress, Shopify) or headless CMS architectures.
  • Knowledge of modern build tools and workflows (e.g., Webpack, Vite, or similar).
  • Experience with TypeScript or other typed JavaScript variants.
  • Understanding of UX/UI principles and experience collaborating with design teams.
  • Familiarity with analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Yext Analytics) to track website performance.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform essential duties satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties of the position
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times

We put our people first at Heartland Dental, and that shows in our generous benefits package.

Company retains the sole discretion to change the duties of the position at any time.

We provide all employees and applicants for employment the protections of federal, state, and local laws affording equal opportunity in employment.
