What is a data associate?

Data Associates are professionals who collect, manage, process, and ensure the quality of data within an organization. They often work with databases, spreadsheets, and software tools to organize and validate data, making it accessible and accurate for analysis and reporting. Data Associates may also assist with data entry, cleaning, and basic analysis tasks, supporting teams like data analysts or data scientists. Their work is crucial for maintaining reliable information that drives business decisions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data associate?

To thrive as a Data Associate, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid foundation in data management or statistics, often supported by a bachelor's degree in a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools such as Excel, SQL, and sometimes Python or data visualization software is commonly required. Excellent organization, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help individuals stand out in this role. These skills ensure accurate data handling, reliable reporting, and clear collaboration across teams, which are critical for data-driven decision-making.

How does a data associate typically collaborate with other teams within an organization?

Data Associates frequently work alongside analysts, engineers, and business stakeholders to ensure data accuracy and accessibility. They may be responsible for gathering data from various sources, cleaning datasets, and supporting the data needs of other departments. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as Data Associates often receive requests for reports or data updates and must coordinate with technical and non-technical colleagues to deliver actionable insights. This collaborative environment helps Data Associates learn about different business functions and can open doors for career growth.

A Brief Overview
The Data Architect -designs, builds, and governs data frameworks supporting productivity, labor, and volume analytics. This role serves as the strategic bridge between clinical, operational, and financial source systems-including Epic, Workday, UKG, and Strata. The architect ensures that staffing metrics and volume data are accurate, standardized, and accessible across all service lines. This individual partners with Finance, Decision Support, HR/Payroll, and leadership to eliminate manual reporting burdens through automated pipelines. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.
What you will do

  • Data Architecture & Systems Integration Design enterprise data architecture connecting Epic, Workday, UKG, Strata, and relevant productivity systems. Develop automated data flows sourcing volumes from Epic, labor from UKG, and budgets from Workday. Integrate decision-support platforms like Strata to enable granular, service-line-level statistical reporting. Build scalable data models, mappings, and definitions for weighted statistics and IP/OP designations.
  • Productivity & Statistics Reporting Automate calculation cycles for department productivity statistics to completely replace ad hoc spreadsheets. Standardize system-wide definitions for weighted versus unweighted operational output statistics. Translate complex requirements from Decision Support and Finance into sustainable, long-term technical solutions. Support recurring cycles (daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly) with highly validated, low-latency data feeds.
  • Governance, Quality & Documentation Establish governance standards and source-of-truth designations for volume, labor, and weighted output. Perform data quality audits and routine reconciliation across systems to proactively resolve discrepancies. Maintain clear documentation including active data dictionaries, ETL/ELT logic charts, and mapping tables.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Support Act as technical advisor in CFO, Finance, and Decision Support strategy meetings. Partner with financial analysts to uncover reporting pain points and eliminate low-value manual work. Provide strategic guidance to IT, HRIS, and Finance teams regarding downstream configuration changes.
