Job description

Functioning within the Health System’s mission, values, objectives, policies, and procedures and under the general supervision of the medical director/physician, the Polysomnographic Technologist intern will commit to the prescribed training protocol for the internship and upon completion, register and take the BRPT examination within the prescribed timeframes. The intern will be provided appropriate clinical hours to evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including sleep apnea testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education.  Responsibilities include colleting, analyzing and integration patient information in order to meet the patient-specific needs; determining final testing parameters in conjunction with the physician and established protocols; reviewing the patient’s history and verifying the medical order(s); and providing age appropriate patient education.  The Polysomnographic Technologist intern will select appropriate equipment and calibrates for testing, applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards, and performs routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting and desensitization.  

Education:  RPSGT Internship will follow Pathway 4: Focused Training.  Must have a minimum of 819 hours of clinical experience in polysomnography and have completed a STAR-designated Focused education program; or a combination of a Self-Study and Focused 2 education program. This must be completed with-in 25 weeks of enrollment.

Licensure/Certification: Upon completion of the internship, the intern will sit for the BRPT RPSGT examination, and become successfully registered with-in one year of completion of the clinical rotation.  BLS required.  

Experience: Intern must be actively certified in the one of the following health care fields: Medical Office Assistant (MOA), State Tested Nurse Assistant (STNA), Certified Phlebotomist

Skills:  Must demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills, appropriate social skills, and strong customer service skills.  Must also demonstrate computer skills needed for the position, teamwork, critical thinking and the ability to work with minimal supervision to analyze complex situations and apply policies.
