Employer & Industry UsageUsed across advertising, marketing, media, and design firmsPrimarily in advertising agencies, media companies, and branding firms

Creative Leadership involves guiding teams and setting strategic creative goals, while a Creative Director focuses on managing creative projects and campaigns. Both roles require leadership skills and industry experience, but Creative Leadership emphasizes broader strategic oversight, whereas Creative Directors are more hands-on with project execution.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Creative Leadership, and why are they important?

To thrive in Creative Leadership, you need a background in design or the arts, experience managing creative teams, and often a relevant degree or portfolio demonstrating innovative vision. Familiarity with industry-standard creative software, project management tools, and sometimes certifications in design or leadership are typically expected. Exceptional communication, strategic thinking, and the ability to inspire and motivate others help distinguish top creative leaders. These skills are essential for guiding teams toward impactful solutions, maintaining project cohesion, and driving creative excellence within organizations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Creative Leadership roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Creative Leadership roles often face the challenge of balancing innovative vision with practical constraints such as budgets, timelines, and stakeholder expectations. They must also foster a collaborative environment that encourages creativity while ensuring team alignment and productivity. Addressing these challenges involves clear communication, setting realistic goals, and promoting a culture of open feedback and continuous learning. Additionally, creative leaders benefit from staying informed about industry trends and regularly seeking inspiration to keep their teams motivated and forward-thinking.

What is creative leadership?

Creative leadership is a style of management that emphasizes innovation, flexibility, and the encouragement of new ideas within a team or organization. Creative leaders inspire others to think outside the box, take calculated risks, and challenge conventional ways of doing things to drive growth and problem-solving. They foster a culture where experimentation and collaboration are valued, helping teams adapt to change and stay competitive in dynamic environments. This approach is especially valuable in industries where adaptability and fresh perspectives are crucial.

Job description

About Scale Media

For the past 12 years, Scale Media has been building and scaling science-backed wellness brands. Our portfolio of brands, including Live Conscious, 1MD, and Essential Elements, has grown to 9 figures in revenue while operating profitably with no external funding.

Our team is made up of operators, marketers, and builders focused on products consumers actually trust. We're investing heavily in data and AI to sharpen how we develop products and scale brands.

We believe the best decisions come from data, curiosity, and continuous learning. We value high ownership, candid feedback, and thoughtful execution. As a fully remote company, we lead with clear communication, accountability, and trust, and we give people real room to grow and make an impact.

Scale Media has been recognized as one of Forbes' Best Startup Employers, a Great Place to Work, an Inc. Best Workplace, and an Inc. 5000 company.

If you take ownership, think for yourself, and like solving hard problems alongside people who do the same, you'll fit right in.

The Role

We're hiring a Creative Director to lead brand creative across our portfolio, with a focus on upleveling our websites and brand visual identity systems. The goal isn't just better-looking work; it's building brand trust and differentiation through visual storytelling.

This role owns creative direction for our owned channels, including brand websites, email, and packaging. You'll partner closely with Digital Product, Retention, Growth, and Brand teams to improve the quality and consistency of customer-facing experiences across the portfolio. You'll also play a critical role in modernizing creative workflows through AI-enabled systems and tooling.

This is a hands-on role. We're looking for someone with strong creative instincts and high standards who still wants to be deeply involved in the work—reviews, feedback, direction, and major creative decisions—rather than operating purely as a people manager.

What You'll Own

Brand visual identity systems
The foundational visual language, brand standards, and design systems that define how each brand looks, feels, and behaves across our owned customer experiences.

Creative direction for owned surfaces
Visual design and storytelling across each brand's website, partnering with Brand Marketing to translate brand identity into the site experience. Creative direction for lifecycle email and packaging design across the portfolio.

Creative production systems
How design and production work gets scoped, prioritized, reviewed, and shipped. Improving throughput, quality consistency, and the design review function across teams.

AI-enabled creative workflows
Architecting how AI tooling improves production speed, iteration quality, and operational leverage. Tools shift quickly; we're looking for someone who designs workflows and outcomes and evolves the systems they build as the tooling moves.

Team leadership
Leveling up a junior creative organization through stronger standards, clearer direction, and better accountability.

What Success Looks Like

In year one, we'd expect:

• Visibly upleveled websites across all three brands—design quality, UX, and visual storytelling
• A documented brand visual system per brand, actively used by both Creative and Performance Creative teams
• Packaging refreshes scoped and in progress where they support brand strategy
• Measurable improvements in design throughput and consistency, with a functioning review process
• AI workflows producing meaningful production-speed gains, with documented patterns the team can scale
• Strong working relationships with Brand Directors, Performance Creative, Digital Product, and Retention teams

What We're Looking For

Deep DTC creative leadership
You've led brand and website creative at a DTC consumer brand. You understand modern ecommerce design, customer psychology, and how brand and performance work together.

Strong taste and design judgment
You know what premium consumer brands should look and feel like, and you can articulate why specific creative works—or doesn't. Your portfolio demonstrates it.

Hands-on creative leadership
You still want to be in the work—reviewing, directing, and deciding—not just managing managers.

Systems and operations thinking
You've built or rebuilt how creative organizations work, including prioritization, review processes, design systems, and production workflows.

AI fluency at the architecture level
You can design AI-enabled workflows using whatever tooling best fits the job and stay current as the landscape evolves. Workflow design matters more than tool-name expertise.

Analytical mindset
You care about business outcomes and customer behavior, not just aesthetics.

Cross-functional collaboration
You work effectively with Growth, Ecommerce, Brand, and Retention teams without creating unnecessary process complexity.

7–10+ years of relevant experience in:

• Creative Director roles within DTC consumer brands
• Brand design leadership positions at high-growth ecommerce companies
• Agency creative leadership with deep ecommerce and digital experience

Preferred, But Not Required

• Experience in supplements, wellness, or beauty—categories where brand trust drives purchase
• Strong website and ecommerce UX background
• Experience leading multi-brand creative organizations
• Experience leveling up junior-heavy teams

What We Offer

• Salary: $100,000–$150,000
• Excellent medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
• Fully remote, full-time position
• Monthly work-from-home stipend
• Generous paid time off program
• Discounted products
• An amazing team to work alongside
