Job description

Controller

5W Public Relations is seeking an exceptional leader to join our growing Finance team in our New York office. As Controller, you will be responsible for management of accounting processes to ensure accurate reporting of business results, including overseeing the financial close process. This role is responsible for the execution and direction of financial controls in support of company and department objectives. You will lead an already built-out accounting department while also working collaboratively with colleagues across all levels and departments. You are curious, a fast learner, analytical, and comfortable in the details while thinking strategically.

Here's what you'll be doing:

  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close process, ensuring efficiency and accuracy in accordance with US GAAP
  • Ownership of the general ledger, balance sheet, intercompany transactions, reconciliations, revenue, fixed assets, and short-term cash-flow projections
  • Oversee AR and AP functions
  • Identify appropriate department metrics and KPIs in support of department objectives and deadlines
  • Implement new accounting standards and standard operating procedures in accordance with best practices and evolving accounting guidance 
  • Perform assessment of current systems, applications, processes, and the control environment and make recommendations for improvements and automations
  • Develop internal processes and policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
  • Implement and improve upon key accounting software to ensure systems are at scale, accounting for volume and complexity, in keeping with the demands of the business
  • Partner with department leadership to provide and analyze monthly data for rolling forecasts
  • Provide contract review and documentation, as needed
  • Support and develop the accounting team, currently group of 4
  • Serve as an authorized banking representative to review payment requests and authorize bank payment transactions; act as system administrator for banking platforms
  • Participate in and/or manage projects and tasks as required

Here's what you have:

  • Minimum 8+ years of accounting experience in either public accounting, private or a combination of both; active CPA preferred
  • 3 to 4 years of experience in a Controller function
  • Bachelor's or Master's in Accounting, Finance or other related field
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP and the ability to apply these principles practically
  • Strong MS Excel skills required (Modeling, VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, VBA Macros, etc.)
  • ERP experience including underlying processes, consolidations, and intercompany transactions
  • Proficiency with standard accounting products and platforms (NetSuite experience highly preferred)
  • Excellent follow-through with colleagues on projects/tasks; setting clear guidelines and expectations
  • Confident in identifying problems and proactive in forming solutions; undertakes initiative and enjoys managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Low ego - you are a hands-on, roll up your sleeves type of professional
