What is a contract technical recruiter?

Contract Technical Recruiters are professionals who specialize in sourcing, screening, and hiring technical talent—such as software engineers, IT specialists, and other technology-focused roles—on a contract or temporary basis. They typically work for staffing agencies or as independent consultants, partnering with companies to quickly fill urgent or specialized technical positions. Their responsibilities include understanding technical requirements, managing the recruitment process, and negotiating contracts with candidates. Contract Technical Recruiters play a crucial role in helping organizations scale their technical teams efficiently and effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract technical recruiter?

To thrive as a Contract Technical Recruiter, you need in-depth knowledge of technical roles, strong sourcing abilities, and experience in full-cycle recruitment, often backed by a bachelor's degree in human resources or a related field. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), Boolean search techniques, and recruiting platforms like LinkedIn Recruiter is essential. Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and negotiation skills help you connect with both candidates and hiring managers. These competencies are vital for efficiently identifying top technical talent and ensuring a smooth hiring process in a competitive market.

What are some typical challenges faced by contract technical recruiters, and how can they be managed effectively?

Contract Technical Recruiters often face the challenge of quickly adapting to new company cultures, processes, and technology stacks while meeting aggressive hiring targets. As their assignments are typically time-bound, they must rapidly build relationships with hiring managers and candidates, efficiently source hard-to-find technical talent, and stay current with market trends. Effective communication, strong organizational skills, and leveraging networks or recruitment tools can help overcome these challenges and ensure successful placements within tight timelines.

Job description

What your experience will be
You'll be the person who finds and brings in the technical talent that makes Slang's product possible. Day to day, that means partnering closely with our Engineering, AI/ML, and Product hiring managers to deeply understand what they're actually building, what kind of minds thrive on their teams, and how to find people who might not be actively looking but would be the right fit. You'll own the full recruiting cycle for your open roles-sourcing, screening, coordinating, and closing-and you'll be the primary relationship between candidates and Slang from first touch to offer acceptance.
You'll report into the Head of People and work alongside a lean, high-accountability People team that is building the systems and culture of a company in its critical scaling phase. Your manager is someone who cares deeply about doing recruiting well-not just filling seats, but making thoughtful hires that compound over time. You'll have a meaningful say in how we run searches and iterate on our process, because we're still building the playbook rather than just executing a frozen one.
This is a fully remote role with occasional travel to company offsites and headquarters. You'll work in an async-friendly environment, and you'll use AI tools actively-to write better job descriptions, surface stronger candidates, move faster, and free yourself up for the human work that actually matters.
Why You Belong Here and How You Will Grow
At Slang, we're overachievers-but not in the grindy, zero-sum sense. We push hard because the work genuinely matters, and we hold each other to high standards because we respect each other. As a Technical Recruiter, you'll be in the room (or on the call) for some of the most consequential decisions a growing startup makes: who we hire. That earns you trust and visibility that you won't find three layers removed from leadership at a larger company.
You'll grow here because you'll be given real scope and real feedback. We won't hand you a process and ask you to color inside the lines. We'll ask you to help design the lines, and we'll tell you honestly when something isn't working and when you've figured something out that we should systematize. Humility Ability-one of our core values-means that everyone on the team is genuinely open to learning from each other, regardless of tenure or title.
If you care about the candidate experience-if you believe that how someone feels during an interview process reflects who a company really is-you'll find a home here. "Be a Good Host" isn't a platitude for us; it's how we think about every touchpoint we control.
What Success Looks Like
  • You manage a pipeline of 4-6 active technical requisitions with strong candidate quality and consistent velocity, keeping time-to-fill within target ranges.
  • Hiring managers consider you a trusted partner, not just a scheduler-they come to you for perspective on the market, candidate reads, and process design.
  • Candidates consistently report a positive, responsive experience with Slang regardless of outcome.
  • You identify and implement at least one meaningful sourcing or process improvement per quarter.
  • You maintain accurate, up-to-date data across our ATS so the People team can pull reliable recruiting metrics at any time.
  • You contribute to offer conversations with confidence, able to hold the comp framework and help close strong candidates.
  • You actively use AI tools in your recruiting workflows and share what's working with the broader team.

What You Will Bring
  • 6-8 years of full-cycle recruiting experience, including at least 2 years sourcing and closing technical roles (Software Engineers, ML/AI, DevOps, or similar).
  • Demonstrated ability to build sourcing pipelines from scratch, not just work inbound applicant queues.
  • Comfortable running structured interview processes and advising hiring managers on assessment best practices.
  • Strong written communication-your outreach, JDs, and candidate messages are clear, warm, and specific.
  • Active and fluent use of AI tools in your day-to-day work (not just awareness-you actually use them to move faster and work smarter).
  • Preferred: experience recruiting in a startup environment (Series A-C), where process is still being built.
  • Preferred: familiarity with multi-state hiring considerations (California, New York, or similar).
  • Preferred: experience working in or alongside a People/HR function rather than a standalone recruiting team.

How Work effects my Life
As Slang's Technical Recruiter, you'll have a direct line between your work and the company's ability to ship - the people you hire will define what Slang builds next.
  • Work primarily remote with occasional travel to headquarters and company offsites
  • Competitive salary and equity package reflecting your expertise and contributions
  • Comprehensive benefits including health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Professional development opportunities to enhance your skills and career trajectory
  • Contribute to a company mission that transforms the restaurant and hospitality industry

This role will sharpen your ability to assess technical talent and business fit simultaneously-a lens that will serve you in whatever direction your career grows.
Compensation & Location
Compensation for this role is location-based and benchmarked against local market data aligned to the employee's primary work location. This is a NYC-based remote role. Total compensation may vary by role level, and experience. Our range is therefore wide and not meant as a negotiation range.
Employment Type: Contractor (opportunity to transition to FTE)
Base Compensation: $105,000-$150,000/yr (paid hourly: $50-75/hr)
Our Vision
Calling a business shouldn't feel like a robot-hostage situation, where you're forced to listen to horrible music and can't reach a human, while enduring a soulless voice uttering "I'm sorry I didn't quite get that" on repeat for eternity. (shudder) That's why we started Slang AI We use the latest AI and audio wizardry to make transacting via voice so enjoyable it's more human than human. By 2030, we will save businesses and consumers 1 billion minutes of precious time while transforming voice channels into the preferred mode of communication (it's faster and easier than text).
We have backgrounds building product at companies like Spotify, Buzzfeed, the New York Times, and OpenTable -shipping experiences that have reached hundreds of millions of users. Now, we're using our backgrounds to start a new culture, one that puts product and human-centered design above all else while fostering constant learning and growth. Sound like something you'd like to be part of? Get on board.
Our Values
Overachiever Fever. We're overachievers (we don't know any other way)
AI Native. We don't just sell AI. We are Al.
Humility Ability. We approach each other with curiosity and openness (know-it-alls not welcome!)
Be A Good Host. We build for hospitality. We should embody it.
About Slang AI
Slang AI is redefining customer engagement through conversational AI, making every interaction seamless and efficient. Our mission is to transform the restaurant industry by providing the ultimate voice AI solution for consistently outstanding customer experiences.
At Slang AI, we believe how we build matters just as much as what we build. We foster a culture rooted in hospitality, ownership, and clarity, where every "Slangsta" feels valued, supported, and connected to the broader impact of our work in the AI-powered future of restaurants.
