Job description

About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent, and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And we're working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised nearly $3 billion in capital, making us the largest and leading private fusion company in the world.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a Contract Mechanical Test Technician

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Test Technician to support assembly and testing activities for the SPARC components under the SATP program. This individual will work alongside our current Lead Mechanical Tech to execute high-stakes vacuum and pressure testing.

What you'll do:
  • Helium Leak Detection: Perform advanced leak testing using tracer probe, hood, and helium-filled object techniques.
  • Pressure Testing: Execute pneumatic pressure proofing protocols according to safety and engineering standards.
  • Vacuum System Integration: Set up, connect, and operate turbomolecular pumps and mass spectrometer leak detectors (MSLD).
  • Hardware Competency: Proficently handle and install various vacuum and fluid connections, specifically KF, CF, VCR, compression fittings, and NPT.
What we’re looking for:
  • 3+ years experience in a lead or senior technical role involving complex mechanical assembly
  • Minimum 40 hours of formal classroom training in NDT/Leak Testing; ideally currently certified or eligible for ASNT Level II in Leak Testing (LT)
  • Proven experience troubleshooting vacuum system integrity and managing system-wide leak detection protocols
  • Familiarity with the hardware used in fusion-relevant or high-vacuum environments
  • Demonstrated experience working around high-hazard environments (vacuum forces, high pressure, and cryogenics)
Must-have requirements:
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
This is a contract position.
