What is a contract project manager?

A Contract Project Manager is a professional hired on a temporary or project-specific basis to plan, execute, and oversee projects within an organization. Unlike full-time project managers, contract project managers are engaged for a set duration or until the completion of a particular project. They are responsible for defining project goals, managing timelines, coordinating teams, and ensuring deliverables meet client requirements. This role is common in industries where projects are short-term or require specialized expertise. Contract project managers offer flexibility and specialized skills without the commitment of a permanent hire.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract project manager?

To thrive as a Contract Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, experience with contract negotiation, and a relevant degree or certification such as PMP. Familiarity with project management software such as Microsoft Project or Asana, as well as knowledge of contract management systems, is typically required. Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills help you navigate stakeholder expectations and manage project risks. These abilities ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with contractual obligations.

What are some common challenges faced by contract project managers, and how can they effectively address them?

Contract Project Managers often face challenges such as managing multiple stakeholders with varying expectations, adhering to strict timelines, and ensuring compliance with contractual agreements. To address these challenges, it's important to establish clear communication channels, regularly monitor project progress, and proactively identify potential risks. Building strong relationships with clients and team members can also help in resolving conflicts quickly and maintaining project momentum.

Job description

Job Title: Project Contract Manager
Location: Saint-Bruno, QC
Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Industry: Rail / Transportation / Rolling Stock
Compensation: $115,000-$125,000 CAD annually
Schedule: Hybrid - 3 days onsite per week in Saint-Bruno

About the Opportunity:
We are supporting a leading global transportation organization in the search for a Project Contract Manager to join a major new rail program in Saint-Bruno, Quebec.
This is a newly created, highly visible role supporting the execution of a multi-billion-dollar rail contract with a minimum five-year project horizon. The successful candidate will work closely with project leadership and directly with the customer, taking significant ownership of contract execution, commercial risk, claims, changes, negotiations and contractual strategy.
This opportunity is ideal for an experienced contract or commercial professional with a strong railway background, ideally within rolling stock, who is comfortable operating independently in a complex, customer-facing project environment.

Why You'll Love Working Here:
*Supportive, team-driven culture that values collaboration, transparency, and accountability

*People-first environment that encourages employees to bring their authentic selves to work
*Strong focus on partnership, innovation, and delivering meaningful results for clients and candidates

Sound like a good fit?

What You'll Do:

The Project Contract Manager will work closely with project leadership and cross-functional teams while maintaining a strong, direct relationship with the customer. This is a highly visible and customer-facing role that requires someone who is confident managing complex contractual matters independently, navigating commercial risks, supporting negotiations, managing claims and changes, and ensuring contractual obligations are understood and effectively executed throughout the project lifecycle.
The successful candidate will ideally bring direct railway experience, with rolling stock experience strongly preferred, along with a strong understanding of complex project delivery environments. Experience working with large-scale contracts, particularly those involving Target Price, Progressive Design-Build, Alliance or PPP/P3 models, will be highly valued.
This role is best suited to someone who is comfortable operating with a high level of autonomy and does not rely heavily on Legal for day-to-day contract execution. Legal support will be available when required for significant disputes or escalations, but the Project Contract Manager is expected to take ownership of contractual issues, customer correspondence, change management, claims, negotiations and commercial risk as part of normal project execution.
The position will also require significant interaction with a range of stakeholders, including private-sector organizations, public-sector entities and government customers. Strong communication, negotiation, relationship-management and interpersonal skills are therefore essential. The successful candidate must be comfortable sitting directly across from the customer, managing sensitive commercial discussions and building credibility with senior stakeholders.
As the project grows, the role may also provide the opportunity to support or oversee a small contracts/commercial team, with individual team members potentially focused on areas such as subcontracting, procurement or goods. While extensive people-management experience is not required at the AG09 level, prior mentoring or leadership exposure would be considered an asset.
Candidates should bring approximately 7-10 years of relevant contract, commercial or project-management experience, ideally within rail, rolling stock, transit or another highly complex project environment. An engineering or technical project background is strongly preferred, particularly for candidates who have transitioned into contract, commercial or claims management.
The successful candidate must be professionally bilingual in French and English and able to work onsite in Saint-Bruno approximately three days per week. The specific onsite days can remain flexible based on project and team requirements, but regular in-person customer interaction will be an important part of the role.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to step into a senior, highly visible role within a global organization and contribute to a long-term, large-scale transportation program with significant commercial complexity and executive-level exposure.
