Consumer Insight Research information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Consumer Insight Researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Consumer Insight Researcher, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in market research methodologies, and typically a degree in marketing, psychology, or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools such as SPSS, Qualtrics, or Tableau, as well as experience designing and interpreting surveys, is essential. Excellent communication, critical thinking, and curiosity help researchers translate data into actionable insights and effectively share findings with stakeholders. These skills and qualities are crucial for generating meaningful consumer insights that drive strategic business decisions.

How does a Consumer Insight Researcher typically collaborate with marketing and product development teams?

Consumer Insight Researchers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between customers and internal teams. They work closely with marketing to tailor campaigns based on consumer behavior and preferences identified through research. Additionally, they collaborate with product development to inform new features or products, ensuring offerings align with real customer needs. Regular meetings, presentations, and data-driven workshops are common ways these collaborations occur, making strong communication skills essential.

What is consumer insight research?

Consumer insight research is the process of gathering and analyzing data about consumers’ behaviors, needs, motivations, and preferences to help businesses make informed decisions. This research uses a variety of methods, such as surveys, interviews, focus groups, and data analytics, to uncover patterns and trends in consumer behavior. The insights gained enable companies to tailor their products, services, and marketing strategies to better meet the needs of their target audiences and improve customer satisfaction.

Job description

Senior Manager, Global Consumer Insights (Freelance/Contract) We're partnering with a well-known global consumer brand to find a Senior Manager, Global Consumer Insights for a high-impact contract opportunity. This person will step into a strategic insights function supporting brand, product, and marketing teams during a key leave coverage period, with an ideal timing of early July through mid-November. This role is ideal for someone who knows how to turn research into action.

You'll work closely with internal stakeholders and top-tier research partners to shape briefs, guide studies, pressure-test findings, and translate data into clear recommendations for the business. The focus is less about building dashboards or writing heavy code, and more about consumer understanding, storytelling, and strategic application. Ideally this person has led consumer insights work that informs brand strategy, campaign development, product decisions, and marketplace understanding, and knows how to connect research to action.

The right person brings experience in consumer insights within apparel, footwear, or a closely related consumer brand environment. Deep agency-side experience can also work well, especially if you've partnered directly with brands and know how to bridge research with real business context. This role requires strong judgment, excellent communication, and comfort working across brand, marketing, and product design teams.

You'll likely be involved in a mix of vendor management, custom research, survey development, insight synthesis, concept and campaign testing, product feedback work, and stakeholder presentations. About half the work sits with external research partners, while the other half is more internal and cross-functional. Experience managing agencies and shaping research outputs for executive and cross-functional audiences is important.

Helpful tools and platforms may include Q/Displayr, Excel, PowerPoint, Tableau, Power BI, Euromonitor, Circana, Mintel, and Alchemer. Light familiarity with SPSS, R, panel platforms, or AI-assisted insights tools is a plus, but this is not a deeply technical analytics role.
