What are Components Engineers?
What Does a Components Engineer Do?
A components engineer oversees the proper selection of components for an electrical or mechanical assembly, or in the design of a new piece of machinery. As a components engineer, your responsibilities include testing and installing these components to ensure they are of the highest quality before utilizing them in a project. Other duties include identifying the best suppliers for each component and maintaining a library of parts for each project or equipment. A components engineer can work in a variety of industries.
What is the difference between Components Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?
| Aspect | Components Engineer | Electrical Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in Electrical, Electronics, or related field; certifications like IPC or IPC-A-610 | Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred |
| Work Environment | Design, testing, and selection of electronic components; collaboration with manufacturing | Design, analyze, and develop electrical systems; testing and troubleshooting |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Electronics manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, consumer electronics | Power systems, telecommunications, automation, electronics |
Components Engineers focus on selecting, testing, and ensuring the quality of electronic components used in products, while Electrical Engineers design and develop electrical systems and circuits. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications, but their daily tasks and industry applications differ.

Could you be the full-time Senior Product Cost Engineer we're looking for?
Your future role
Take on a new challenge and apply your costing and electrical engineering expertise in a cutting-edge field. You'll work alongside collaborative and forward-thinking teammates.
You'll play a key role in shaping cost-efficient solutions and driving innovation in electrical systems. Day-to-day, you'll work closely with teams across the business (engineering, sourcing, and manufacturing), support the electrical engineering team in adopting a design-to-cost approach, and much more.

Work location: Saint-Bruno (South Shore of Montreal)
Status : Permanent/full time (40h)
Hybrid : 3 days in office / 2 days remote
We'll look to you for:
Realizing estimations of the technical cost of parts/systems defined by the electrical engineering team
Supporting the electrical engineering team in adopting a design-to-cost way of working
Participating in the creation of target costs
Supporting the sourcing team in negotiations with suppliers
Applying or developing methodologies to calculate the technical cost of electrical components/systems throughout the product development cycle
Applying or developing cost analysis methods for electrical components/systems
Proposing improvements to the design or manufacturing process to reduce technical costs
Promoting a cost-conscious culture within the engineering team
Providing detailed cost breakdowns of components to support the sourcing team during negotiations
