Position Summary

Arch Insurance Group Inc., (AIGI), has an opening with the Claims Division on the Marine team as a Director, Ocean Marine Claims. The responsibilities of this role will focus heavily on first party Ocean Marine Cargo claims but will include other marine coverage types, including Hull and P&I, Marine Liabilities, Marine Excess, and more. It is anticipated that the role will initially be an individual contributor role but may evolve as Arch's marine business unit expands.

Responsibilities
Actively manage litigated and non-litigated claims consistent with Arch claim and litigation management guidelines
Communicate with all key claim stakeholders, including insureds and insured representatives, claimants, other insurers, producers, surveyors and adjusters, experts and others to bring claims to resolution
Convey key information about individual losses or broader trends to Claim and Underwriting management
Develop and update action plans and accurately set reserves within authority based on claim investigation and through industry knowledge, skills and experience and escalating when appropriate
Participate as Subject Matter Expert in development of training for internal and TPA staff
For Program claims, maintain contact with the TPA claim staff, business line leader, underwriter, and defense counsel, and program manager
Occasional travel to and from locations within the United States and potentially abroad to attend mediations, trials, and other proceedings relevant to the resolution of claims or to represent Arch Marine at industry events and conferences
Negotiate resolution of claims
Maintain a diary of all claims, post reserves in a timely fashion, and expeditiously respond to claims inquiries from insured, counsel, underwriters, brokers, and senior management

Experience & Required Skills


10-15+ years of Ocean marine claims handling experience
Experience with any Inland Marine coverage types and/or marine recoveries is a plus
Marine insurance and claim operations concepts and working knowledge of insurance claims operations in the area of commercial Ocean Marine claims, including direct experience handling hull and marine liability claims and various forms/coverages (e.g. P&I crew and passenger claims, Charterers Legal Liability, Marina Operators Legal Liability and P&I, Ship Repairers Legal Liability, Stevedores Liability, Wharfingers Legal Liability, etc.)

Extensive experience with marine insurance coverage evaluation/interpretation
Exceptional communication (written and verbal), influencing, evaluation, negotiating, listening, customer relations, and interpersonal skills to effectively develop productive working relationships with internal/external peers and other professionals across organizational lines
Strong time management and organizational skills
Demonstrated ability to take part in active strategic discussions
Demonstrated ability to work well independently and in a team environment
Hands-on experience and strong aptitude with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

For individuals assigned or hired to work in the location(s) indicated below, the base salary range is provided. Range is as of the time of posting. Position is incentive eligible.

For NYC, Long Island, Jersey City, Morristown: $145,700 - $196,700/year

For Chicago, Philadelphia, Hartford: $131,100 - $177,030/year

  • Total individual compensation (base salary, short & long-term incentives) offered will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to geographic location, scope & responsibilities of the role, qualifications, talent availability & specialization as well as business needs. The above pay range may be modified in the future.
