Position Summary
The Transportation & Capacity Planning Analyst plays a pivotal role in optimizing freight operations and supporting strategic logistics initiatives. This position is responsible for analyzing transportation data, developing reports, and providing insights to improve service levels, reduce costs, and enhance carrier performance. The analyst collaborates closely with internal departments and external carriers to ensure efficient, cost-effective, and compliant transportation processes. This role is responsible for forecasting capacity requirements, identifying gaps, and leading initiatives that enhance network efficiency. From scaling operations for seasonal demand to implementing transportation systems, this position blends analytical expertise with strong project management skills to enable effective, scalable logistics solutions.
Key Responsibilities
  1. Capacity Planning & Forecasting
  • Analyze historical data, forecast demand, and assess seasonal trends to develop short- and long-term transportation capacity plans.
  • Collaborate with carriers and operations teams to ensure the availability of equipment and drivers
  • Create reports and dashboards to monitor key performance metrics such as utilization, cost-per-mile, and backhaul opportunities.
  • Communicate capacity plans and project updates to internal teams and leadership.
  • Identify capacity constraints and recommend proactive solutions-such as engaging new carriers, shifting modes, or optimizing routes
  • Developing contingency plans for peak seasons, weather disruptions, strikes, port congestion, etc.
  1. Project Management
  • Oversee and support transportation-related projects including carrier onboarding, route optimization, and technology implementations.
  • Develop project timelines, resource plans, and status reports to ensure milestones are met.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams including operations, procurement, IT, and customer service.
  • Prepare project status reports and present findings to leadership.
  1. Data Analysis, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance planning accuracy, streamline operations, and prevent capacity disruptions.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret transportation data (e.g., freight spend, transit times, service levels, capacity utilization).
  • Develop and maintain reports and dashboards to track KPIs, carrier metrics, and network performance.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and deliver actionable insights to resolve transportation issues or inefficiencies.
  • Utilize TMS and planning tools to model what-if scenarios, assess network impacts, and forecast capacity needs
  • Contribute to annual transportation budget planning by providing data-driven capacity assumptions.
  1. Cost Optimization & Carrier Support
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities through rate analysis, route optimization, and carrier selection.
  • Support freight audit and payment process by validating invoices and resolving discrepancies.
  • Evaluate carrier performance metrics and assist in RFPs and contract negotiations.
  • Analyze rates, routes, and shipment profiles to reveal cost-saving opportunities
  • Support RFPs, carrier evaluations, and contractual negotiations to select the most effective and cost-efficient partners
  1. Systems, Compliance & Documentation
  • Coordinate operations and customer service teams to support accurate order routing and timely shipment execution.
  • Ensure adherence to transportation-related policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain shipping documentation, routing guides, and freight claims records.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business, Analytics, or a related field.
  • Relevant work experience accepted in lieu of degree.
  • 3-5 years of experience in transportation planning, logistics, supply chain, or project management.
  • 1-3 years of experience in transportation, logistics, supply chain, or data analytics.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Power BI, and data analysis tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with TMS and project management software such as MS Project, Smartsheet, or Jira.
  • Familiarity with demand forecasting or supply chain planning tools is a plus.

Preferred:
  • Experience in multi-modal transportation.
  • Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience is a plus.
  • Experience working in a high-volume, fast-paced transportation network.
  • Project Management Certification experience is a plus.

Working Conditions:
  • Standard workweek: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Occasional support for after-hours as required.
  • Primary work location is Duluth, GA.
  • Occasional travel to branch offices (Mobile, AL / Savannah, GA / Oakland, CA) may be required.
