About the Role
Springer Nature is looking to hire an Associate Editor or Editor for the Chemistry Books acquisition team. This individual will be responsible for the strategic growth, development, and editorial management of a global portfolio within Chemistry. The role involves acquisition of book projects; market/competitive research; negotiating publishing agreements; evaluating book proposals and submitted manuscripts; travel to conferences/campus visits for acquisitions purposes; developing and maintaining a large network of authors/editors; liaising with other departments such as production, marketing, and sales.
Responsibilities
  • Manages and grows a publishing program in the field of Chemistry, with a specific focus on Physical Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Theoretical & Computational Chemistry, and Nanotechnology; delivering competitive and profitable products in line with strategy
  • Performs key publishing acquisition activities, including:
    • Soliciting, reading, and evaluating proposals and manuscripts to determine commercial viability, audience, market, and suitability for the list
    • Researching market trends to identify new authors, new titles, and new products
    • Managing the backlist associated with the assigned areas, maintaining profitable relationships with existing authors, book series editors, and editorial board members
    • Supporting authors and editors in developing their book projects
    • Negotiates publishing contract terms
    • Remaining a point of contact for authors/editors throughout the publication process
  • Ensures editorial policies and processes are consistently applied across activities and goals set by editorial management are met
  • Develops and maintains a good network of authors/editors through various engagement activities within the research community
  • Continually promotes and builds the brand through virtual interactions as well as travelling widely to academic conferences and campus visits
  • Maintains continuous cooperation and dialogue with editorial service, marketing, production, and other relevant departments concerning individual projects as well as general questions of mutual interest
  • Supports the training and/or mentoring of new and junior team members

Experience, Skills & Qualifications
  • College degree in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline; advanced degree (MSc or PHD) ideal.
  • Editorial experience is a plus
  • Fluency in English, both oral and written
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels and as part of a team
  • Positive and proactive approach to problem solving, taking ownership to drive and complete tasks
  • Strong organisational skills, including proven ability to consistently meet deadlines
  • Target-driven and motivated to meet core objectives and KPIs

US Annualized Base Salary Range: Associate Editor - $66,300 - $75,000 / Editor - $80,000 - $90,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level, and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
