Job Summary

Love crisp headlines, clean layouts, and catching that one sneaky typo everyone else missed? Join our newsroom as a Copy Editor and help shape the daily news experience from the inside out. This role blends sharp editing skills with creative page design, ensuring every edition is accurate, engaging, and visually compelling, all while racing the clock toward deadline.

Position Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design and paginate newspaper pages in Adobe InDesign with a focus on clean, reader-friendly layouts that look as good as they read.
  • Copy edit stories for grammar, clarity, accuracy, and AP Style without losing the writer's voice.
  • Write headlines and cutlines that grab attention and deliver the story fast.
  • Team up with editors, reporters, and photographers to build pages that are complete, accurate, and visually strong.
  • Proofread pages with a meticulous eye for consistency, tone, and detail before they go to print.
  • Hit nightly deadlines with speed and precision.
  • Adapt quickly to late-breaking news and make layout adjustments on the fly.
  • Contribute ideas to improve workflows and keep the newsroom running smoothly.
Qualifications
  • Experience in pagination and or copy editing preferred; copy desk experience is a bonus.
  • Strong grasp of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and AP Style.
  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign is required.
  • Ability to stay calm, focused, and accurate under deadline pressure.
  • Sharp attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Degree in journalism, communications, English, or related field preferred but not required.
Work Environment
  • Based in our Coeur d'Alene office. This is an in-person role.
  • Expect a newsroom schedule. Nights, weekends, and holidays are part of the rotation.
