This position will be located onsite in San Diego, California.
Job Overview
Assist in the operation, monitoring, maintenance, and inspection of stationary boilers, high fire water heaters, steam systems, hydronic systems, and other mechanical equipment used to provide utilities for buildings or industrial processes. Support Boiler Technicians and the Boiler Technician Lead by performing routine checks, recording readings, maintaining logs, observing equipment conditions, and assisting with basic maintenance and housekeeping duties.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Duties:
  • Provide support with the operation and monitoring of boilers, high fire water heaters, steam systems, hydronic systems, and related mechanical equipment.
  • Perform routine rounds and record boiler readings, temperatures, pressures, water levels, chemical levels, fuel levels, and other operational data.
  • Monitor boiler water, chemical, and fuel levels and report abnormal conditions to the Boiler Technician and/or Boiler Technician Lead.
  • Perform inspections, preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, start-ups, shutdowns, and basic repairs.
  • Perform visual and audible checks of boilers, pumps, motors, piping, valves, gauges, steam traps, strainers, check valves, relief valves, and related appurtenances.
  • Check gauges, recording devices, alarms, controllers, and other monitoring equipment for proper indication and operation.
  • Report leaks, abnormal noises, alarms, equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or other deficiencies immediately.
  • Provide support with boiler water testing and chemical treatment activities under the direction of a Boiler Technician or Boiler Technician Lead.
  • Maintain logs associated with daily and monthly boiler performance for reporting purposes.
  • Assist with cleaning boiler rooms, mechanical spaces, equipment areas, tools, and work areas.
  • Stage tools, materials, and equipment for boiler maintenance and repair work.
  • Assist with removal and installation of boiler components as directed.
  • Support proper lockout/tagout, safety, environmental, and housekeeping practices.
  • Keeps supervisor, Boiler Technician, and Boiler Technician Lead apprised of unique situations and problems encountered.
  • Respond to urgent and emergency calls as requested.
  • Perform all other work-related duties as assigned.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to work safely around boiler and steam systems.

Job Requirements
Mandatory:
  • Must have basic mechanical aptitude and the ability to safely work around boiler systems, steam systems, hydronic systems, and mechanical equipment.
  • Prior experience in boiler operations, facilities maintenance, utilities, mechanical maintenance, or industrial operations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their basic uses, care, and maintenance.
  • Ability to perform visual, audible, and basic mechanical checks of equipment.
  • Ability to accurately read gauges, record readings, complete logs, and report abnormal equipment conditions.
  • Basic knowledge of boiler safety, steam systems, pumps, valves, piping, and mechanical equipment is preferred.
  • Possess a valid Driver's License.
  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be able to comprehend, read, speak, and write proficiently in the English language.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of people in a professional and courteous manner in diversified situations.

Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed mostly indoors. Outdoor work is subject to temperature extremes and inclement weather conditions.
  • Work hours are subject to change, with weekend work or overtime as needed.
  • Subject to hazards that may cause personal bodily harm; diseases, cuts, bruises, burns, common colds, influenza, dust, odors, and elevated noise levels.
  • Tasks may be performed on elevated, uneven, inclined, hard, and soft-carpeted floors, cement structures and surfaces, including building rooftops and elevated passageways.
  • Must be able to work under, in or around buildings, structures, or fixtures, such as ducting systems, attics or crawl spaces.

Physical Requirements:
While performing duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand and/or walk for long periods at a time, sit, use of hands and fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, climb ladders, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear, or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision.
