What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Battery Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Battery Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or materials engineering, experience with battery manufacturing processes, and often a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as AutoCAD or MATLAB), Six Sigma methodologies, and data analysis tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies are essential to ensure efficient battery production, maintain high quality standards, and drive innovation in the rapidly evolving energy storage industry.

What are some common challenges faced by Battery Process Engineers during scale-up from laboratory to production?

Battery Process Engineers often encounter challenges when translating lab-scale processes to full-scale manufacturing, such as maintaining quality and consistency in large batches, optimizing equipment for high throughput, and ensuring safety protocols with reactive materials. These professionals must troubleshoot unexpected variations, coordinate closely with multidisciplinary teams (like R&D, quality assurance, and maintenance), and refine processes to meet both performance and cost goals. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential for overcoming these hurdles and ensuring smooth production ramp-up.

What does a Battery Process Engineer do?

A Battery Process Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and overseeing the manufacturing processes involved in producing batteries, such as lithium-ion cells. They work to improve efficiency, quality, and safety in battery production by developing and refining procedures, selecting appropriate materials, and troubleshooting issues. Additionally, they collaborate with teams across research, development, and manufacturing to scale up new battery technologies from prototype to mass production. Their role is critical for ensuring that batteries meet performance and reliability standards required for various applications, including electric vehicles and consumer electronics.

What is the difference between Battery Process Engineer vs Battery Manufacturing Technician?

AspectBattery Process EngineerBattery Manufacturing Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field; often requires experience in process designHigh school diploma or technical certification; on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentDesigning, optimizing, and overseeing manufacturing processes in labs or production facilitiesOperating machinery and performing manual tasks on the production line
Industry UsageInvolved in process development, quality control, and process improvementFocuses on assembly, equipment operation, and quality checks

The Battery Process Engineer focuses on designing and improving manufacturing processes, requiring technical expertise and engineering credentials. In contrast, the Battery Manufacturing Technician handles day-to-day production tasks, operating equipment and ensuring product quality. Both roles are essential in battery manufacturing but differ in responsibilities, skills, and work scope.

Job description

Lyten is leading an industrial revolution through Lyten 3D Graphene, a breakthrough supermaterial unlocking a new generation of products - from lithium-sulfur batteries and energy storage systems to concrete admixtures, lightweight composites, and next-generation sensors that are revolutionizing industries. Together, these innovations are making a massive global improvement and driving real-world impact across energy, mobility, construction, and defense.

At Lyten, we believe the most meaningful careers begin with purpose - and with people who want to make a difference. We're not just developing advanced supermaterials - we're about to change the world as we know it, reshaping how energy is stored, how products are built, and how progress is made.

We're entering an exciting growth phase, scaling production across the U.S. and Europe and expanding our team of engineers, scientists, and innovators.

Apply now to join our team and be part of something bigger than yourself - where collaboration, creativity, and purpose come together to build the technologies that will define the next century.

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Process Engineer Intern to join our advanced manufacturing team. In this role, you will gain hands-on experience with many steps in electrode manufacturing.

You will bridge the gap between engineering design and floor operations by documenting critical processes, performing data analysis, and supporting R&D initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

1. Process Documentation & Knowledge Management

Video Capture & Categorization: Record, categorize, and document standard operating procedures (SOPs) for primary electrode processes (Mixing, Coating, Calendering, and Slitting).

Digital Library Creation: Organize all recordings, images, and process summaries into SharePoint to build a robust training library for future operations.

2. Operations & Core Process Learning

Continuous Improvement: Analyze floor operations to identify process bottlenecks or inefficiencies and propose optimization strategies.

Cross-Shift Training: Partner with the Engineer-in-Charge to train technicians across multiple shifts on updated standard practices.

Key Deliverables

End-of-Internship Presentation: Deliver a final compilation of findings, video/photo documentation, and process summaries to leadership.

SharePoint Repository: A fully organized, searchable digital library of training videos and documentation.

SOP Documentation: Finalized or advanced drafts for scale-up processes and pilot production QC guidelines.

Qualifications & Skills

Education & Experience

Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field.

Strong hands-on aptitude and comfort working in a manufacturing or laboratory environment alongside technicians.

Technical & Soft Skills

Data Analysis: Ability to perform data analysis to back up process improvement recommendations.

Communication: Excellent communication skills to explain technical concepts clearly to both operators and engineers.

Media & Organization: Proficient in capturing/editing instructional media and managing digital spaces (e.g., SharePoint).

Safety-First Mindset: Strict adherence to safety protocols, particularly when handling chemical formulations and manufacturing machinery.

What We Offer

Direct mentorship from experienced battery and manufacturing engineers.

Hands-on experience with production-scale and R&D battery manufacturing equipment.

A collaborative, fast-paced environment at the forefront of clean energy technology.
