Battery Process Engineer information

What does a Battery Process Engineer do?

A Battery Process Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and overseeing the manufacturing processes involved in producing batteries, such as lithium-ion cells. They work to improve efficiency, quality, and safety in battery production by developing and refining procedures, selecting appropriate materials, and troubleshooting issues. Additionally, they collaborate with teams across research, development, and manufacturing to scale up new battery technologies from prototype to mass production. Their role is critical for ensuring that batteries meet performance and reliability standards required for various applications, including electric vehicles and consumer electronics.

What is the difference between Battery Process Engineer vs Battery Manufacturing Technician?

AspectBattery Process EngineerBattery Manufacturing Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field; often requires experience in process designHigh school diploma or technical certification; on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentDesigning, optimizing, and overseeing manufacturing processes in labs or production facilitiesOperating machinery and performing manual tasks on the production line
Industry UsageInvolved in process development, quality control, and process improvementFocuses on assembly, equipment operation, and quality checks

The Battery Process Engineer focuses on designing and improving manufacturing processes, requiring technical expertise and engineering credentials. In contrast, the Battery Manufacturing Technician handles day-to-day production tasks, operating equipment and ensuring product quality. Both roles are essential in battery manufacturing but differ in responsibilities, skills, and work scope.

What are some common challenges faced by Battery Process Engineers during scale-up from laboratory to production?

Battery Process Engineers often encounter challenges when translating lab-scale processes to full-scale manufacturing, such as maintaining quality and consistency in large batches, optimizing equipment for high throughput, and ensuring safety protocols with reactive materials. These professionals must troubleshoot unexpected variations, coordinate closely with multidisciplinary teams (like R&D, quality assurance, and maintenance), and refine processes to meet both performance and cost goals. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential for overcoming these hurdles and ensuring smooth production ramp-up.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Battery Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Battery Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or materials engineering, experience with battery manufacturing processes, and often a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as AutoCAD or MATLAB), Six Sigma methodologies, and data analysis tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies are essential to ensure efficient battery production, maintain high quality standards, and drive innovation in the rapidly evolving energy storage industry.

Job description

American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) provides technical development and commercialization of domestic, sustainable sourcing of critical battery materials through lithium-ion battery recycling and battery metal extraction technologies for use in batteries that power electric cars, grid storage applications, and consumer electronics and tools. Our first of kind systems produce commercial-scale battery materials that are sold into the battery manufacturing supply chain.

As our Manufacturing Process Engineer, you will support and enhance the operations of our proprietary lithium-ion battery recycling processes. This individual will work closely with our engineering team and a variety of internal and external experts to ensure the effective functioning of our facility. The ideal candidate will possess a history of process enhancement, problem-solving skills, and a capability to improve methodologies in a unique process system. This role involves consistently assessing existing processing steps and recommending and developing advanced solutions to perpetually enhance system performance and operability. This position will report to the Director of Engineering.

Requirements

  • Understand process capability of the battery recycling system through data analysis and in-depth knowledge of the process.
  • Utilize process improvement techniques (Lean, Six Sigma, SPC etc.) to further improve battery recycling process.
  • Define system and equipment alarms using Statistical Process Control techniques to notify and/or shut down equipment during out-of-control events.
  • Troubleshoot down equipment and implement solutions to address root cause (Conveyors, Motors, Pumps, Valves etc.).
  • Support specification of a factory MES system. Support integration, commissioning and troubleshooting of MES system to ensure product meets company needs.
  • Develop clear data collection, analysis and visualization tools using software such as MySQL, Python, Minitab, JMP, Tableau and Ignition.
  • Keep document records for the equipment system up to date (e.g., Equipment Data, Process & Instrumentation Diagrams, Controls Narratives, and Wiring Diagrams)
  • Support commissioning activities of future expansion plans for our first-in-kind battery recycling process.
Qualifications
  • Background in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical or Industrial preferred)
  • 3+ years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and commissioning first-in-kind manufacturing lines.
  • Experience with MES systems, preferably integration of MES systems.
  • Experience implementing data-driven improvements to operational lines (DOE, Change Management).
  • Experience in Statistical Process Control (SPC), Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma.
  • Working knowledge Autodesk Software: Revit, AutoCAD and/or Navisworks.
  • Ability to positively collaborate in a team environment.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary
  • Company-sponsored health, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Parental Leave
  • Company-sponsored Employee Assistance Program
  • Stock options
  • 401(K)
  • Flexible paid time off
