Battery Process Engineer information

What does a Battery Process Engineer do?

A Battery Process Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and overseeing the manufacturing processes involved in producing batteries, such as lithium-ion cells. They work to improve efficiency, quality, and safety in battery production by developing and refining procedures, selecting appropriate materials, and troubleshooting issues. Additionally, they collaborate with teams across research, development, and manufacturing to scale up new battery technologies from prototype to mass production. Their role is critical for ensuring that batteries meet performance and reliability standards required for various applications, including electric vehicles and consumer electronics.

What is the difference between Battery Process Engineer vs Battery Manufacturing Technician?

AspectBattery Process EngineerBattery Manufacturing Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field; often requires experience in process designHigh school diploma or technical certification; on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentDesigning, optimizing, and overseeing manufacturing processes in labs or production facilitiesOperating machinery and performing manual tasks on the production line
Industry UsageInvolved in process development, quality control, and process improvementFocuses on assembly, equipment operation, and quality checks

The Battery Process Engineer focuses on designing and improving manufacturing processes, requiring technical expertise and engineering credentials. In contrast, the Battery Manufacturing Technician handles day-to-day production tasks, operating equipment and ensuring product quality. Both roles are essential in battery manufacturing but differ in responsibilities, skills, and work scope.

What are some common challenges faced by Battery Process Engineers during scale-up from laboratory to production?

Battery Process Engineers often encounter challenges when translating lab-scale processes to full-scale manufacturing, such as maintaining quality and consistency in large batches, optimizing equipment for high throughput, and ensuring safety protocols with reactive materials. These professionals must troubleshoot unexpected variations, coordinate closely with multidisciplinary teams (like R&D, quality assurance, and maintenance), and refine processes to meet both performance and cost goals. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential for overcoming these hurdles and ensuring smooth production ramp-up.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Battery Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Battery Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or materials engineering, experience with battery manufacturing processes, and often a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as AutoCAD or MATLAB), Six Sigma methodologies, and data analysis tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies are essential to ensure efficient battery production, maintain high quality standards, and drive innovation in the rapidly evolving energy storage industry.

Job description

Position Overview:
Solid Power is seeking a Process Engineer II to join our talented team of engineers and scientists working to revolutionize the battery industry through the development of next-generation, all solid-state rechargeable batteries. Solid Power is a public company with a dynamic, fast-paced, and highly collaborative environment where innovation thrives. This role will play a key part in owning, troubleshooting, and improving the electrode slurry process within our battery cell pilot line. The preferred candidate will have process or manufacturing engineering experience, strong troubleshooting instincts, and a drive to make hands-on improvements alongside operators.
Electrode slurry is the first step in the cell manufacturing process, and it sets the foundation for everything that follows. Changes and deviations here carry downstream into the cell manufacturing process, and the data we collect from finished cells makes it one of the most demanding and consequential processes we run. As the dedicated owner of this process, you will operate, troubleshoot, and improve the equipment and protocols that produce anode, cathode, and separator slurries, working day to day with operators, supervisors and fellow process engineers. Comfort working in gloveboxes and a dry room is part of the role.
Job Duties:
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for electrode slurry processing, including operation, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Own the slurry process equipment, including the mixing and material characterization tools, and become the expert on their operation, maintenance, and improvement.
  • Develop and improve closed processing methods for powder handling and slurry transfer.
  • Explore and establish new mixing and processing protocols for anode, cathode, and separator slurries.
  • Scope, justify, purchase, and implement new equipment to advance the process.
  • Incorporate operator input to drive practical, lasting improvements.
  • Train operators on new processes to a proficient level.
  • Document processes, including work instructions and standard operating procedures.
  • Analyze production data to identify process drift, efficiency opportunities, and quality drivers.
  • Track and close out corrective actions, working with your peer group to confirm they are completed on time and effective.
  • Apply Lean Six Sigma tools to implement changes in a cross-functional way.
  • Identify or design hardware to support in-process inspection.
  • Work in a dry room and glovebox environment for extended periods.
  • Flex coverage to support off-shift tasks as required.

Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience in a manufacturing or pilot-scale processing environment.
  • Experience with battery cell manufacturing, solid-state or lithium-ion preferred.
  • Experience owning a process or unit operation, or a track record of independent process work.
  • Familiarity with slurry formulation, rheology, particle size analysis, or mixing.
  • Experience with process data analysis and statistical analysis.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, Minitab or JMP.

Physical Requirements:
  • Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as necessary including, but not limited to eye protection, hair net, gloves, face mask, coveralls, full-face respirator or PAPR
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk.
  • Prolonged periods on the production floor.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. daily.

Salary Range: $79,000 - $122,000/year
Benefits: Solid Power offers a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical/dental/vision insurance, employer paid Life/AD&D/STD/LTD insurance, 401k with company match, 8 paid holidays + the week between Christmas and New Years off, Unlimited PTO, up to six (6) weeks paid FMLA leave, cell phone reimbursement and eligibility to participate in our bonus and equity plans.
Export Control Requirements: This position could require access to technology, software and other information that is subject to governmental access control restrictions, due to export controls. Employment in this position is conditioned on the continued availability of government authorization to authorize release of such items, to the extent required, including without limitation an export license, or other documentation required to establish authorization to receive access to such items.
Company may delay commencement of employment, rescind an offer of employment, terminate employment, and/or may modify job responsibilities, compensation, benefits, and/or access to Company facilities and information systems, as Company deems appropriate, in order to ensure compliance with applicable government access control restrictions.
This position will be posted for a minimum of 7 days and will remain open until filled or adjusted based on the volume of applicants.
All offers of employment at Solid Power are contingent upon clear results of a thorough background check.
