AspectBank ChefBank Teller
CredentialsCooking certifications, culinary degreesHigh school diploma or equivalent, basic banking training
Work EnvironmentKitchen, restaurant, or hotelBank branch, customer service area
Industry UsageHospitality, food serviceBanking, financial services
Job FocusPreparing and presenting foodHandling customer transactions and inquiries

The main difference between a Bank Chef and a Bank Teller is their industry and job focus. A Bank Chef works in the hospitality industry, specializing in culinary arts, while a Bank Teller operates within the banking sector, focusing on customer service and financial transactions. Both roles require specific credentials and work in different environments, serving distinct purposes in their respective industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bank Chef, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bank Chef, you need strong culinary skills, food safety knowledge, and experience in high-volume kitchen environments, often supported by a relevant catering qualification or certification. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment, stock management systems, and food hygiene regulations is typically required. Excellent time management, communication, and adaptability are vital soft skills for working across different sites and responding to varied menus and teams. These competencies ensure consistent, high-quality food service and smooth operations across changing locations and demands.

What are bank chefs?

Bank chefs are skilled culinary professionals who work on a temporary or relief basis at different restaurants, hotels, or catering establishments, often through an agency. They step in to cover staffing shortages, busy periods, or special events, providing essential support to kitchen teams. Bank chefs must be adaptable, experienced in various cuisines and kitchen setups, and able to quickly integrate into new environments. This role offers flexibility and variety but requires excellent organizational and communication skills.

What are some unique challenges faced by bank chefs working across multiple locations?

Bank chefs often cover shifts at various sites, which means adapting quickly to new kitchen environments, equipment, and team dynamics. This can be challenging, as each location may have different menus, procedures, and expectations. Flexibility, strong organizational skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with unfamiliar teams are essential for success. The role also offers the opportunity to gain diverse culinary experience and build a broad professional network within the catering industry.

What is the highest paying type of chef?

Executive chefs and head chefs typically earn the highest salaries among culinary roles, especially in fine dining restaurants, hotels, or private clubs. Specialized chefs such as pastry chefs or sushi chefs can also command high wages, particularly with extensive experience and certifications. Leadership skills and management responsibilities often contribute to higher pay in these positions.

Job description

We are currently recruiting for a Junior Sous Chef to join Harrods' passionate and high-performing dining team within our iconic Knightsbridge store. This is an exciting opportunity to step into a leadership role within a globally recognised luxury brand, supporting the Head Chef and Sous Chef in delivering a dining concept where craftsmanship, consistency and innovation are evident in every detail.

About The Role

As a Junior Sous Chef, you will play a key role within a fast-paced, high-volume kitchen, overseeing multiple sections and ensuring consistently high standards of food quality and team performance. Working closely with the Head Chef and Sous Chef, you'll support daily operations, drive production planning, and ensure every dish is delivered with precision, consistency and attention to detail.

You'll act as an influential leader within the brigade, balancing hands-on support with coaching to develop and motivate your team. From managing stock and resources to maintaining food safety, compliance and audit readiness, you'll ensure smooth kitchen operations while stepping up to lead in the absence of senior chefs, contributing to a high-performing and collaborative environment.

About You

You are a confident and capable kitchen professional with a passion for delivering exceptional food and supporting high-performing teams. With a strong culinary foundation across multiple sections, you bring a calm, organised and solutions-focused approach, thriving in fast-paced environments.

You combine strong technical expertise with clear communication and leadership skills, guiding teams during service while supporting the development of junior chefs. With a solid understanding of food safety, compliance and kitchen administration, you take pride in maintaining high standards and contributing to an efficient, well-run kitchen.

About Us

Harrods is one of the world's leading luxury department stores and we're becoming a destination for top designers, and the most sought-after brands from around the globe. Our combined mission is to make visiting our iconic Knightsbridge store one of the world's most inspiring shopping experiences.

Our Promise to You

Help us make the impossible possible for our customers and we'll do something remarkable for you. As well as offering a friendly environment to inspire your best work, we provide abundant opportunities and support to build an exceptional career across the varied specialisms of our business.

In return for your hard work as a Commis Chef, you'll learn every aspect of working in a busy, premier kitchen and will receive some great benefits including:

  • Competitive salary package of up to 15 p/h (this is made up of a generous base salary plus service charge)*
  • Set contracted hours - paid additional working hours at an overtime rate of 1.5 p/h
  • Minimal late evenings by industry standard - majority finished by 10pm
  • Staff Canteen
  • 30 days' annual leave (including bank holidays) + birthday off
  • Up to 33% Harrods discount and many other employee benefits

Uniquely You

Whilst our job adverts outline the ideal qualities, skills, and prior experience for the role, we believe in the potential for growth and value individual strengths. If you can demonstrate the majority of skills and strong experience to thrive in this role, we would encourage you to apply.

At Harrods we believe the personality and authenticity of our people sets us apart. We celebrate and invite applications from all cultures, backgrounds, tastes, and experiences and are proud of our culture where people from all walks of life can grow and thrive. What makes you unique makes us exceptional.
